2 years between each of the first 3 books, 5 years between books 3 and 4, and 6 years between 4 and 5, despite them both apparently being worked on at the same time. With Winds of Winter showing no signs of any release this year, that will be at least 5 years between it and book 4, so the earliest you could reasonably expect the series to be finished is around 2021 if Martin doesn't slow down any further

Personally with the TV series stealing his thunder and showing the agreed upon ending many years earlier I don't think there will be a lot of hype by the time he finally does finish it, which is kind of sad for how much effort he's put into it

Don't forget that five or six chapters in The Winds of Winter were originally written for A Dance with Dragons, only to be pulled from that book.

I've given up hope on the series ever finishing through the books and I am happy to watch it conclude through the TV show.

Like I said before, they both have the same ending so at least we will finally get to see where Martin was heading with this.. even if it is a different path to get there.

Books 4 and 5 were a single book until he realized how long it was. A lot of the complaint about the amount of time between them was that they were already written and he spent years splitting out individual storylines to make the two books.

I think it is still going to follow the books. They kept going back and forth between Rattleshirt and Mance burning so I think it was Rattle on the spit. I liked the chapters about the musician attempting to save Aria from Winterfell so I hope that's where we're headed.

I can't believe there's no Lady Stoneheart. What's the purpose of all this screen time for Brienne if that's the case? How can they leave out what would be a perfect cliffhanger moment? And what was the purpose of showing the Brotherhood at all?

Yeah, it doesn't make sense not to have her appear. Plus, I'm like 90% sure Jamie's arc ends up there as well.

they might just be better at keeping spoilers in house too, you dont really need any extras to do the LS reveal

I still think there's a good chance shes the closer for this year, the only other thing that makes sense is Jon, and with what will surround him that seems more likely for the 9th episode

Why do we a tv thread with BOOKS OFF LIMITS and in the book thread we have "Now more tv talk"? Seriously, what is the point of this thread now? Now that we know the show will reveal the story before the books would it not make sense to put in the title "TV SHOW OFF LIMITS"? Otherwise might as well close this thread.

Are you not aware that there are still many big story lines where the TV show has not caught up with the books, that many here would like to discuss?

I think you missed the whole point of my post. This thread should be about the books only. What is the point of the thread if the tv show moves beyond where the books are but tv talk is allowed here?

holy f, I am not complaining about the thread, I am asking why there is more tv talk in it knowing the shows will now surpass the books. Christ, this board has gotten ornery lately...

That is a fair point, this thread was made to talk about the books and now the show is going to spoil that. Things are already starting to change quite a bit from the books and I imagine it is gone beyond "oh they did this instead of this" to "oh they did that different because it is set up to reveal XXXX that will happen in WOW".

No way for us to know that right now, but better safe than sorry? That being said this thread generally doesn't see a lot of action.. and if we take the show out it will probably die off given the fact that Martin releases 1 book a century.

I question how many book people will be avoiding the TV show and associated spoilers. That subset will be somewhat unique and someone else can make that thread.

As for this - I know the TV Show watchers don't want to discuss the book at all. Even if they aren't (as many) spoilers anymore, there are a lot of changes that can be brought up. And this appears to be an appropriate thread to discuss those. Like Lady Stoneheart, Jon Snow demise, Arya training, etc.

But if you want proof, dissentowner, go into the other thread and try discussing the books. MMF's memory is long, I'd bet you would get a rude response.

Because the thread was created long before it was suggested that the shows would overrun the books.

This thread is for people who consume both the books and TV and aren't picky about one spoiling the other.

If someone wants a thread about just the books with no TV talk they can create one.

I'm pleased that two episodes of Season 5 advanced Brienne's story farther than AFfC and ADwD did.
