I (briefly) played with a Galaxy S that a customer brought in.. very nice phone. Love the screen. I'd still get an iPhone 4 myself though... if I could.

I'm leaning that way as well. I would get the iPhone 4 if I could but I'm not prepared to wait in line or call Rogers every day and the Galaxy S would be different.

Even worse, Telus is doing computer upgrades or something so they can't get to billing information until 16:00 tomorrow. So someone would have had 20 hours to do whatever they wanted until Telus could suspend it.

I lost mine at a bar this weekend and no one turned it in. I'm back to my old Sony Ericsson and it's killing me.

My Sister in Law called and asked about getting the iPhone as she's got about a year left on her contract. They basically said they don't really care if she cancels her contract because she can't get the phone. They've had so many people doing it that they're not going to do anything about it

I printed my story before, but I'll warn again. The Galaxy S is a very buggy phone. Don't expect to be able to plug it in and transfer music to it easily. I couldn't get it to even see my phone after 2 days of trying, and I have a computer science degree. Not saying it isn't possible, but the phone was just a pain to use as a music phone. I returned mine after 2 days.
Also, the GPS does not find your location at all. Kind of annoying, and this won't fixed until September.
Not saying do not get it, just be careful.

Yeah, same spiel with me. My phone is dead so I need a new one but they can't do a single thing to get me an iPhone 4. And their attitude is basically that I'm SOL. I did manage to negotiate with them and at the end of this month I can pick one up if I want. But the road to get to that point was bumpy.
One lady at Telus told me that they want to make sure they have enough iPhone 4's to draw in new customers. So loyal customers can pound sand in the mean time. Once you sign that contract they stop giving a crap about you.

I have a year left on my contract and the person I spoke to (with telus) was more than happy to terminate my contract for a reasonable price. I suppose its a crap shoot, you never know what kind of rep you'll get.

What did they say exactly? That they would cancel for a reasonable price if you agreed to sign another three year term? Just wondering because the lady told me that I could pay $5 per month remaining to cancel if I signed up again. If I just wanted to cancel it was $20 a month.

Going to go today or tomorrow to the Telus store to pick one up. When my mom got one they said they were back-ordered a month, but 3 days later they called and she got it. haha, hopefully that is the same with me.
So excited, after using a Razor for 3+ years now, it is time to move on.

My story to get one goes like this:
Had the day off so decided I would try and get one from the apple store unlocked. Went in about 8:45 thinking I was pretty clever and going to be first in line. Imagine my surprise when the line was already 40 people. I stood in line while an apple representative came over every 10 minutes to inform the crowd there was no phone coming in and none expected to.
Not one person in the line moved.
By 9:30 the line had grown at least another 50 people behind me, and was continuing to grow. Finally, at about 10:15 they said they had received a shipment. They went through the line asking how many phones (limit 2) and model, 16 or 32. Once they did that they separated the line into those that were buying without contract and those that were. As I was buying it outright, I got moved to the "fast" line. Another 45 minutes past that, I finally got in the store and they rang up the phone. Oh and they made people buy each phone separate, so if you wanted two, you had to be rung through the store till twice.
They also provided me with a micro sim for Telus free.
Total time: About 4 hours. But I do love this phone (and I am not an apple fan boy)
Post Script: Trying to get it activated was an entire second mess...Telus Activation was down for two days...when I called I expressed my anger being month to month said that I will take my unlocked phone and cancel with them...Received my activation for free and a 50 buck credit on my bill.

Ya I was shocked. I have been out in BC (okanagan) for the last month so when I went to any Telus store around there and asked, they laughed in my face...which was expected.
I thought I would breeze back into Calgary and just pick one of these up a couple weeks after launch. Its still crazy though and the apple guy says it is like this everyday. Also, after I talked to him some more and asked why they claim not to know what is on order or coming in, he said that the security around these phones and dangers of getting shipments robbed is very real. Basically get them every two days though if you are willing to put in the time and not be hooped on a 3 year contract by a carrier.

So I didn't want to start a new thread but could someone briefly explain to me the advantage of purchasing a phone unlocked as opposed to locking into a 3 year contract?
What phone plan do you hop onto with an unlocked device? Month to month?

The advantage is you are not stuck with a contract with one company, and can move to whatever company you want with your phone (as long as the phone works on the bandwidth the company is using i.e. Wind mobile won't work on iPhone)
So you can theoretically get better deals from companies as they don't have you bent over, and you are free to cancel anytime without any penalty.
