Especially since it would mean another wasted year of McDavid for the Oilers. I hope former Flames on teams other than the Oilers win the cup for the next few years.

Markstrom was fairly consistent with the Flames except for the last season under Darryl. Some years he was a great goalie but others he was simply a decent goalie - again except for Darryl's last year. I think that the odds of him putting in a completely terrible season are less than him being at the very least a league average starter - which is what the Devils needed this year to make the playoffs.

Sounds like Luke Hughes will miss the 1st month of the season with a shoulder injury.

There's no way to know until we get there. Markstrom is about as inconsistent as you can get. The year before last, Vanacek was miles better than Markstrom... as was every other goalie in the league.

I was looking at Cup odds the other day and the Devils were 4th highest! lol
I guess no one out east has watched Markstrom play the past few years.

I think the New Jersey pick will be #13 this year...just a guess, but I think Markstrom has a down year and the team disappoints again.

I think they make the playoffs. Hopefully a lower seed and first round fodder though.

I think they should make the playoffs this year for sure. And if markstrom has one of his good years I could then finishing quite high.

He consistently choked when they need him
He is probably good enough on non pressure games to get them to the playoffs though

A few tidbits from Marky interview on spittin chiclets...
- Ian Clarke was huge for him; he was extremely hard on Marky but he needed to hear it
- he was pissed during trade rumours because "one guy says one ting and anodder guy says anodder ting"; different messaging
- the team kept him away from media because they knew he was going to fire back, but he was asked a question around Kipper's night; then was put in penalty box by media relations
Nothing too revealing. But he is pretty funny and much more light hearted than i perceived. I see why he was considered a leader.
Starts at 1:55 if you are interested.

Nemec will likely be on IR as well to start the season. I wouldn't be opposed to both of them getting some time in Utica once they are healthy. The Devs have Kovacevic and Desimone to fill in on the bottom pairing.
Depending on how Casey's camp and early season goes, he might get a look once Hughes and Nemec are healthy and are doing their conditioning stint in the AHL.

I'm not so confident that I'd say "for sure"... If Markstrom has a year like he had for us a few back then Allan wouldn't be able to pull them out of the hole he'd dig... but I do think it's more likely then not that they make the playoffs (probably in a middling position). I think the draft pick the Flames get will probably be in the low 20's/high teens (19-23 range). If he has a Vezina quality season then they're for sure doing well... they have all the pieces to do so now just gotta see them pull them together..

I’m going to target Markstrom in my hockey draft as a hedge. Good or bad, I can be happy.

I find New Jersey as the toughest team to gauge. You can make a rational argument that they can possibly finish as the top team from the east this year. You can also rationalize them (given Markstrom's 'ups and downs') and the overall perception that some of their star players could be injury prone to explain them giving the Flames a high pick in the next couple of years.
I think I have them finishing in the top 3 in the east personally, but it wouldn't surprise me if they experience another poor season. I love Markstrom, but i definitely won't be cheering for them.

The other thing that may be at play here that Markstrom has started to show signs of injuries catching up to him. It may have just been a blip, but if he misses significant time, they Devils could miss the playoffs pretty easily.

You may want to peruse the Dallas series stats again.
If you didn't lay out these silly blanket statements it would be easy to ignore ... he had his ups and downs for sure. But to say consistently choked when he was great for two seasons and a playoff series is pointlessly over the top.

That series was a goaltending master class by both goalies.
