Subject to lottery results, of course – if the Devils finish outside the bottom 10 but move up due to the lottery, that also means the Flames get the unprotected '26 pick instead.

Interesting, hadn't considered that. I wonder what happens if they finish 10th but the pick moves down to 11th as a result of the lottery. Would the Flames get #11 or would it slide?

I think in that case the Flames would get #11. Which is still not bad at all.

I thought those lottery protected picks were always the resulting pick after the lottery, but I could be wrong.

Yes, but I think it's unlikely that the Devils pick happens in 2026... I feel like it's going to convey in 2025.

Agreed. with the team the Devils have, there is no way the Devils are going to finish bottom 10.

It could happen, but it would certainly take a lot of things going wrong for the Devils to finish bottom 10 again with the roster they have. Some combination of injuries, bad luck, or Markstrom turning into a pumpkin again.

Probably... but a lot of the reasons for that have been addressed. Huge upgrade in net with Markstrom and Allen, another year of experience under the belt of their young core, and a healthy Dougie.
They're definitely a team on the upswing and I'd wager that they finish closer to 20th then 10th.

Totally different situation, they have addressed the issues last season
Added Markstrom, have a good 1B (Allen)
Added two dman,
With a much stronger defense and goaltending duo.
Devils, in my view are likely a top 10 team.

Certainly unlikely, but if the injury bug derails them, anything can happen.
It's entirely possible that there are NO terrible teams in the east this year.
NYR, CAR, BOS, TOR, FLA and probably TBL are rock solid
NYI, WSH, DET, PIT and probably PHI are decent
OTT, BUF and MTL are upwardly mobile
That just leaves CBJ. And frankly, NOTHING would surprise me with them.
EVERY team in the east is heading into the season expecting to get at least 80 points. The math says they can't all do it, so whoever runs into significant injury troubles or goaltending woes, could find themselves at the bottom of the pack, looking up.

Even with their lineup last year they underperformed to get to where they were. Run it again with the same personnel and they might finish a fair bit higher.

point remains...sometimes things don't go how we think
Vegas as a WC team and NJ missing the playoffs by 10 points or whatever probably would have got a poster laughed at a year ago. And yeah there will be some sad teams in the East this season, go through them.

The fact we got a 1st for a goalie is good for me anyway. The Devils could win the cup and I’d still be pleased with 32nd OA.

Its kind of a toss up whether Markstrom will be better than what they already have. One year removed from being a massive dog turd on skates. Which is why people wanted the deal done asap. Oh well their problem now.

Depends which Markstrom they get, he seems to be good for a season and bad the following.

Even if that happens it basically just means that they're in the same boat as last year except that they'll have a better 2nd string goalie and improved skaters.
