It could also be Joe Iginla!
Here's the future of the Flames:

2024 VAN 1st: Henry Mews
2025 CGY 1st: James Hagens
2026 CGY 1st: Gavin McKenna

Just hold on to Mercer jersey will cave maybe in the offseason lol.
We couldn’t even extract a 3rd liner for Hanifin.

So, we are now trade watching for Vegas to move the 1st so we can have the unprotected pick and we are definitely Vegas fans in round 1. Go Knights.

The conditions on the first favor the Flames...a 26 unprotected would be the best vs a guaranteed late 24 or a guaranteed not top 10 in 25

Nah. That would have been multitudes worse

That alone is a major win in my books and Conroy deserves some credit.

He did what we have been begging for since Iginla was here. It was never going to be pretty, but I’m stoked that a direction was made and has been followed.

I'd love to know what Brisson was supposidley saying to teams behind the scenes to try to keep Hanifin out of the rental market and get him to one of his preferred destinations.
In the end it's always tough to gauge a trade like this one.
Is the return dissapointing...100%
Did Conroy likely take the best offer on the table after having Hanifin available all year...100%!
It sucks but I also don't really think there is much he could do about it.

A 1st round pick and a very likely 2nd round pick is a good return for Hanifin in abstract, especially as a rental. The player is a throw-in for sure, but at least he could add something to the team for a short period of time while they build for the future.
I think that Hanifin was suddenly overrated by this forum and fanbase for what he did the last couple of months (wasn't amazing to start the year btw), and so recency bias is playing into this a little.
I also think that we are desperate for key building blocks for the future from all these UFAs, and I think we have them overall, but it's hard to see because it's all picks for now.
If you thought you were going to rob another team blind continually, you were dreaming (Vancouver notwithstanding).
The cupboard will be restocked. The team will do the hard and arduous process of building through drafting and development. It's what you all were screaming about for years, and here it is. It ain't gonna be pretty for a bit, but it's what will work long term. Get used to it, and don't bitch and moan now that Hanifin didn't return a 1st, and a 2nd AND an elite prospect. That was never going to happen for a guy like Noah.

Same thing if they trade the 2025 pick. Then 2026 is unprotected?
If that is the case, it almost seems like Conroy knows they will be trading that pick.
|
Vegas is 100% in the win now mode. Just a matter of how long they can keep the window open. But father time is coming for them.
So I agree chances are they trade the '25 pick, which I'm 100% fine with. Wait for that 2026 pick that is unprotected and get another lotto ticket for the next guy with franchise player potential

Flames are already retaining on Tanev and Hanifin, they cannot retain on any more contracts unless my cba knowledge is mistaken

So its 5 UFa's, none who re-signed with traded team (yet), and 2 retention spots for
2 current roster players
6 prospects
2 1sts
1 2nd
4 3rds
1 4th
1 5th
I think.

Ugh.
My brain hurts from reading this.
I can't believe that I still get surprised by how stupid people can be.
If you try to sell something that you are on the verge of losing for nothing you have to take the best offer given.
Conroy can't make these people pay more and he can't conjure up value out of thin air.
Anyone getting mad at him or saying he got fleeced is way too emotional and needs to get a grip.
Do you really think he turned down better offers?
Lmao
