Hold up; if Gaetz has resigned his seat, doesn't Florida need to hold a byelection for its 1st congressional district? Even though he just won re-election, being a Representative in the House is an elected position, so the Republicans can't just unilaterally select someone to fill his seat... right?
Not that the Democrats have a snowball's chance in hell of winning Gaetz' former district, but it's worth a try if it means possibly preventing or diminishing the margins of a house majority by the GOP.
They can for the Senate but not the House. There will be a special election.
But that's a really red part of Florida. If Gaetz got 65%, the next guy will probably get 80%.
Same with Stefanek in New York.

The Onion, the satirical news company that repeatedly spoofed conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, has won the bankruptcy auction for control over his media empire — most notably InfoWars, the far-right, conspiracy-minded website that served as Jones' primary online platform.
Jones announced the sale on X Thursday morning.
"I just got word 15 minutes ago that my lawyers and folks met with the U.S. trustee over our bankruptcy this morning and they said they are shutting us down even without a court order this morning," Jones said.
"The Connecticut democrats with The Onion newspaper bought us," he added.
The Onion plans to shutter Jones' InfoWars and rebuild the website featuring well-known internet humor writers and content creators, according to a person with knowledge of the sale.

Worst timeline, but a timeline where Alex Jones has to watch his empire get stripped for parts and literally turned into a joke.
Pretty great news ngl.
I really hope they have a host that sits at Jones' old desk and pretends to hawk bone marrow and protein products, all while turning apple-red in the face and shouting into the mic.
These lunatics fascinate me, I can't get enough. By the way, this documentary is out there and absolutely incredible.
Filmed over four years with unprecedented access, THE TRUTH VS. ALEX JONES chronicles the riveting courtroom drama of two defamation lawsuits brought by Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims' families against Alex Jones and his website, InfoWars. While exploring the scope and ripple effects of Jones' brand of conspiracy-minded media, the film follows the families' legal efforts to hold him accountable for spreading lies about them and their children. The cases culminate in a historic award of nearly $1.5 billion in damages, followed by Jones declaring bankruptcy.
