I remember (rumours?) that Roenick almost signed here before landing with the Sharks.

To get a goalie probably, but seems like Annunen is working out in the interim. Kuz could replace lehkonen on that top line to some success so there may be something there. But they could also probably target a bigger fish closer to deadline that is younger and with term rather than a possible rental player. Whos to say.

Ultimately, I don't think there is any rush to trade anyone. Still early season and teams aren't quite desperate enough to make changes that could inflate prices much.

If we trade a player, like Huberdeau or Kuz, and retain let's say 3 million dollars a year in salary, are we allowed to trade that retained salary down the road? I hope that makes sense.

It literally has nothing to do with hate, and no the whole league understands what Huberdeau has become in Calgary relative to his contract. There's been many talks about it out east.

Yeah, I'm reading that quote differently. In 2001, he considered the Leafs and Rangers... and then later he almost played for the Flames (the Rangers may have been a different time too since they were basically as bad as the Flames at that time).

He was paid $8.5 million by the Flyers in 2001-02. There's no way the Flames could have paid him anywhere close to that. That was also before Iggy's breakout season and Darryl wasn't here yet, so there was really nothing in Calgary to appeal to a player like Roenick in the summer of 2001.

In 2007, it would have made a lot more sense. That was the same season Nolan signed here and after Amonte was done, when Darryl was recycling his former players.

If I recall him and Darryl did not get along in Chicago. But he wanted to play for him again here.

Amonte era was awful. I’m still scarred from ordering the PPV game and having his penis dangle for a good 30 seconds.

He was almost a flame the year that Gretzky became coach of the coyotes. He had talked and agreed with Sutter on becoming a flame. Later that night Gretzky called him and said he needed him. I remember roenick saying when Gretzky calls and says he needs you , you drop everything and go help him. Lol.

It’s too bad . This wasn’t prime roenick , but we needed his leadership and no none sense attitude for the dressing room.

Frankly, I think the Huberdeau contract is manageable. Specifically for the next 3-4 years. Once guys like Gridin, Honzek, Basha, and others get through their ELC’s, it’s going to be manageable.

Maybe they can buy him out in four years, maybe he ends up on Ronda’s island, maybe he retires, maybe another team is willing to take him on with one or two years left and retention, maybe there’s an expansion draft, maybe there’s compliance buyouts the next time the CBA comes up. Some of these are unlikely, but I suspect that at some point over the next 5-6 years, there’s going to be an off ramp in there somewhere.

As it stands right now, I don’t think it’s a major issue. Mild issue? Definitely. But until some of these younger players start demanding big contracts, the Flames can eat a few years of this and likely will have to.
Each of those outcomes (injury, compliance buyout, cap dump with 2 years remaining, career resurrection, hockey trade, early retirement) might be unlikely on their own, but the likelihood of at least one of those things happening is probably pretty decent. Even if you say, 5% chance on each of those things, it's 25% chance on at least one of those things. If you say 10% chance for each of those things, it's 50% chance that at least one of those things happen. And if you say 15% chance for anyone of those things, it's like a 65% chance.

For the flames...makes sense to roll the dice while they don't need the cap space. And for Huby, being his old self is the only way back to playing for a cup contender. If he gets back to point per game status, he can take a contending team over the top...ie someone will trade for him.

They are leaving room for when Nushkuskin returns in about a week.

Yeah, Calgary was the talk of the town for a couple of years after 2004. I remember Mccarty and Amonte really talking up the city and fans (more than the usual lip service comments). Amonte talking to Roenick about it being a great place to play makes sense.

It's 2024, my guys. You don't have to go on PPV to find dangling penises.

You guys don't remember the Amonte thing from Flames PPV in the 2000's?! That was like one of the biggest memes of that era?

Yeah, they had a camera for some reason in the locker room and we all got the full Amonte. Not the best decision for whomever was in charge at the time.

I saw it. Apparently Amonte was pretty upset about it.

His size, or that it was broadcast?

Full Amonte cracked me up.

I was around following the flames at this time but for whatever reason I have no recollection about this one. Probably a good things.
