Top end/ elite talent wins.
Mangi is fine as your 8-9th best player on a contending team . But he isn’t improving , nor getting younger , and is already making 6 million .
There’s zero reason to sign him after this contract so trade him for as much value as you can
|
I’m in agreement with this. Gotta get the top end talent in. Until then, you have to best your chances through picks. If Mangiapane is the guy to get you a solid return, do it.
Admittedly the amount of games of watch the flames this year has been limited vs past years but he’s a shadow of himself. Before he was pretty exciting and making plays and in the thick of things. These days you barely notice him. Not sure if it’s fully a product of his third line placement but it’s hard to argue that considering Coleman is all over the place. Ultimately I think even those that like him can probably agree he’s replaceable. So if he brings back some good value I’d deal him.

Mangi is a good player, not quite living up to his contract this year in terms of goals.
Coronado looks like he could eventually fill that role on the Backlund line (frankly with Backs and Coleman on your line, a lot of guys could fit in there), so that makes Mangi somewhat expendable if they can extract value from the market.
As others have said, not sure now (this draft) is the right time to sell on Mangi.

I think before season starts is still the best time to deal Mang. Not saying that it will maximize his trade value, but he won’t be getting PP time to boost it as a Flame (and he will be blocking a Coronato / Pelletier.

I'll never get that sentiment from some fans.

Having said that though. The Flames have a log jam coming on the wing and a big shortage of quality centers and D.
Mangiapane is probably the guy with the best combo of bigger contract, weaker stats this year. But enough of a track record to be worth something.
He and Markstrom are the biggest tear down targets in my mind to open up spots for younger guys and bring back some value.
There are always older UFAs that can fill gaps on shorter contracts until the younger players in the system are ready to shoulder more load. Like Zary, Pospisil, Wolf, Coronato ect.

Poster in hf proposed fabbro and glass for Mang. Would love something like that for the flames. All three guys need a change of scenery, mang is the best player in the deal but flames get 2 young pieces in positions of need

Glass looks like a complete bust. Would prefer draft picks myself but that would not be horrible I guess. Glass would at least have a chance to prove he is not a bust in Calgary but I suspect he is a poor man’s Jeff Shantz.

When I read Fabbro I don’t know why but my brain went to Brock Faber and I would have booked Mangis plane ticket myself

I was going to say trade Mangi for Glass and Fabbro and get some cap savings but it would only be 800k. They each have a cap hit of 2.5.

Given what the pro scouts seem to have found in Yegor and Miromanov I would be fine if they liked the trade. But I don’t see much myself in either player. The Flames do not really need to worry about cap savings though.

Start the car! I would trade Mang for Glass without Fabbro.

I think Glass is a lot better then he has shown.

Yeah, glass and a D man is fine for Mang. Flames need better C depth anyways. And a 25 year old RHS Center is a good risk/reward option.

I would do that trade just because we have replacements for Mangiapane, and I am open to any and all projects for C.

Jankowski is outperforming him this year and is only 4 years older.

Yeah, that's why he would be available. What matters is what could he do with a fresh start?

What do you mean only 4 years older? That is significant in hockey years.

Maybe, but only if a kid out works him in camp and steals his spot.

I mean they are both busts. Glass is 25 in two days. His best three seasons in the NHL for points are
35
12
12
By the time Jankowski was 25 his best three seasons were
32
25
0
You are not getting much with Glass IMO. But like I said if the Flames pro scouts think there is something there I trust them given their track record this year.

That would be great - defence and centre depth for a winger, and the dollars almost work.
Can't imagine Preds would make that deal though.

I would be curious if Calgary takes a run a Nikita Gusev, old teammate with Kuzmenko, 89 points in68 games.. does someone give him another go at the NHL?
