Not sure why everyone wants the Flames to pay Stone $4+ million long term. Flames top 4 defensemen are already amongst the highest paid in the league and going forward that number should be decreasing and if it doesn't it means your team is pretty poor at drafting if you can't fill positions with drafted/developed players.

Not sure I agree, he was QUITE bad for what he was paid for for at least a year. He has been pretty good ever since 2014/2015 when Gio went down though.

I sure hope we don't spend $4 million on him.
Honestly not sure of the infatuation with him - he provides little offensively, doesn't play a great game to suppress shots defensively, and while he does play physical isn't the best.

Stone is having a rough year.
If you like advanced stats his are almost the worst in the league.

You have answered your own question. The reason why they need to bring in a top 4 is because there are none coming anytime soon.
Widemans' money is coming off the books, nobody from within deserves it. The D needs a shake up anyways IMO.

Flames don't play against the Senators again this season and play the Stars one more time on March 17.
MacKinnon is based in the maritimes so maybe nothing...
Adam Kimelman @NHLAdamK
Scouts in Philly for Islanders-Flyers tonight: Pittsburgh (2), Winnipeg, San Jose, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal, Columbus, Vegas, Florida
Flames play Philly next week and the Islanders on March 5

Ottawa has asked Dion Phaneuf to waive his no move clause. It’s widely believed the Senators will protect Cody Ceci and Marc Methot along with Erik Karlsson, and ask Dion Phaneuf to waive his no-move...

Engelland has been solid this year, no doubt. And for other long stretches too. But he has also been healthy scratched over his Flames tenure.
The challenge is that if Engelland is your 4th best defenceman, you're not quite good enough. And in a cap world, how much can you pay your bottom pairing? At least IMO.

The 2015-16 Stanley Cup Champions Pittsburgh Penguins might disagree with you there. I would say he would be roughly the 4th best defencemen on that team last year. Maybe the 5th. Pittsburgh used some inexperienced guys last year on D who made a tonne of mistakes.
Engelland was also probably the 5th best defencemen in San Jose last season as well.
Engelland is a dependable defensive defencemen who plays physically, and (IMO) quite the underrated first pass out of the zone. I would be comfortable having him on the 2nd pairing, if the 3rd wouldn't end up being a fire drill.
This guy needs a moniker or something. Deryk "The Underrated One" Engelland.

Pittsburgh really isn't a model that any other team can emulate, though Engelland could have probably been the #5 for San Jose. Dillon-Polak cost them that cup, they were soooooo bad.
To the bolded though, lol.
I wouldn't mind him being stuck to Brodie for the rest of the year, and if he can help Brodie at all I wouldn't be opposed to signing him to a 1 or 2 year deal. The Flames need a physical stop gap guy until they can acquire a legit top 4 guy, Hamilton develops a physical game, or a prospect comes through. Engelland has familiarity with the team, and has been non-garbage going on two seasons now.

You would think that would be a no-brainer for Phaneuf seeing there's a chance he could move closer to LA.

I'm surprised they'd risk Phaneuf to keep Methot.

Methot is a better defenseman. Very underrated.

The Senators haven't asked Dion to waive. It's a speculation article from Sportsnet that says THEY MAY ask him to waive in order to protect Methot/Ceci/Karlsson.
Link here.
Actual quote:

According to Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: “It’s widely believed the Senators will protect Cody Ceci and Marc Methot along with Erik Karlsson, and ask Dion Phaneuf to waive his no-move with the thinking [the Vegas Golden Knights] won’t touch the latter’s hefty contract.”

I feel like this happens every year. TSN and Sportsnet have to build hype for their big deadline day shows, so they start pumping up mediocre and average players months in advance to get people excited. And somehow it seems to work every year. It's the only time of the year that 5/6 defensemen and 30 point forwards are suddenly huge, game changing acquisitions.

Of course Stone has poor advanced stats, he plays bigger minutes on an absolute #### team. Anything other than bad would have been more of a surprise.
