I don't think the Flames can afford to add both Stone and Kulikov in the summer.

I could really see Stone being a target for the Flames with the intent they re-sign him

You need to re-read the first point. It's quite important, and there's no sense in just sending him to the A if they re-sign him. If he continues to stagnate, see ya.

I guess I should know this but do the Flames not have the requisite defensemen to expose? So someone has to be re-signed?

In any case, I'd prefer Engelland at $1.2 million. He owes the Flames for paying him $9 million last 3 years.

Would rather Engelland for another year at $1.5 than Stone at $4 million, which is what he may get on the open market. Let's give our youngsters a chance to step up.

I agree with the Jankowski comment. I'm not convinced he's an NHLer but it's becoming clear he's our top AHL forward prospect. I'd like a plan that breaks him into the NHL vs waiting to see if he makes the team out of camp. Other organizations and businesses groom talent and try to position them for success. 10+ games in the NHL would really help him coming into camp next year and many, many successful players have required multiple stints in NHL before sticking and succeeding.

Yeah but why do we have to trade Versteeg to do this? He's been a very solid #3 LW.

Agree those are independent decisions. But Versteeg on an expiring contract is no different than a guy who has been here 6 years on an expiring contract. Question is where he fits in long term I suppose.

But in general, I don't oppose guys playing out their contract as I don't really believe you build a winner by dumping guys at the deadline. You have to pick your spots.

If the Flames win their next couple, I would love a trade for Patrick Eaves 19G 14A 33Pts. He's a RW, not a huge cap hit, UFA. To me he checks off every box for what the flames need, a cheap RW who scores goals. I'm not sure what a deal would look like, but if the Flames are in the race by the end of Feb, BT should work his magic.

I love the fact that at age 32, Eaves has roared back from the brink. Good for him, proving that age is just a number for the modern athlete.

That would be a great pickup. At just a million cap hit and that production this year he's going to be wanted by a lot of teams. Price will be high.

My only concern with Eaves is that he's only played more than 60 games 4 times in 12 years. More than 70 only twice.

It depends on the cost of bringing guys in. If the Flames go on a huge win streak and are in a playoff spot at the deadline, do they bring in help or just trust the team that would be playing well enough to get them there? Why give up assets when the team is doing well already?

I think Stone would be a great addition to the team but not until the off season. I don't think Engelland is coming back tot he Flames and I'm willing to bet he ends up wearing a letter for the Golden Knights next year.

I really don't think the Flames should be buyers unless they can get a player at an extremely low price.

With the season he's had, there is virtually no chance Engellend signs a 1 year deal for half of what he made this year.

If he signs at that cap hit he'll be getting a number of years of contract.

It is really weird this new feeling where Engelland isn't responsible for all our goals this year.. And also that gasp he has actually played decently on the PK.. Bizarro world.

We have Wideman as our whipping boy this year.

I'm truly interested in who it will be next year.

Personally I don't think he's going to get anything north of $2 million. He's going to be 35 in April, he's not getting any younger, and he plays a #5/6 role, a role that is not exactly impossible to fill. Most other teams will look to fill internally with younger bodies, it's not exactly like teams are going to be clamouring for his services, and if they do, it will likely not be on July 1.

He might get a bit more, but there's no way he's going to be getting close to what he is now.

Engelland as the whipping boy was always an indicator of an uninformed fan to me. Guy has been criminally underrated by some on this board for most of his tenure here.
