Newer vehicles might be good, but without anyone refining gasoline, I think the Hummer would be a bad choice for fuel economy alone. They'd be making frequent stops to look for gas stations or abandoned vehicles to siphon gas.
Motorcycles would seem to be the good choice if they didn't need to carry a lot of stuff / kids.

Would a Hummer be that much worse on gas than the blue pickup or the SUV they used to pick up Hershall from the bar?
I suppose a lot depends on how quickly the appocolypse happened. If it was fast; as suggested by the abandoned cars along the freeway, you would think gas stations would still have gas in the tanks. Even if the stations "ran out" of gas, the tanks shut off with several hundred litres left in them. It could be pumped out.
And then I wouldn't be too concerned about fuel economy in the long run. I would think that the gas would go stale long before you ran out.
Edit- and to add to Ben's picture; there is quite a difference between hitting another full sized truck, and hitting a zombie.

Another issue with gas, it only has a limited shelf life, about six months to a year. Diesel lasts forever I think.

The only solution to this problem is a zombie rickshaw!

And an H2 to boot. Prolly look the same after hitting a zombie. A real Hummer? That's another story....
And I would imagine the mileage on a real Hummer would be waaaaay worse than that blue pickup.

That's actually the best explanation I've read yet. I was working on the whole two virus theory but this makes way more sense.

I think we've mentioned it before, but while they were at the CDC, I couldn't help but notice a wide range of Humvees around.
That would be the vehicle I would go with. Diesel powered, light on 'dangly bits' like heated seats etc. heavy on important things like independent suspension, run flat tires, ground clearance, impact resistant windows and weapon mountability.
Frankly, in a zombie apocalypse, I'd venture much of my time would be spent trying to find a better vehicle, and a better gun, and for that type of scenario, nothing better than an M1114.

A quick search shows the H1 got between 10-12 MPG. I can't see an old pickup truck doing much better than that; maybe 15 MPG at best.
OK, so maybe not a Hummer. But what about something like an F-150 or similar. Something that can go off road, and be sturdy enough to handle running over a hoarde of zombies.
It just seems odd that this group hasn't stockpiled any and all supplies they can get their hands on. Between vehicles, dry goods, and weapons they aren't ready for much. Also, they have already noted that they have 50 head of cattle; so they may as well be ringing the dinner bell. Well, why haven't they moved the cows into the barn?
Don't get me wrong, I love the show. But instead of having the secondary characters doing nothing, how about they take care of these small details?

The more supplies and stuff they collect, the less mobile they become. Now they've got to use semi truck full of stuff and what happens when they hit a traffic snarl like where Sophia ran off. Or else they're frequently refuelling. I think their current small, mobile convoy of vehicles is pretty good.
A Hummer might be okay, but its pros don't really outweight its cons. There are vehicles that have more seating, more cargo room, etc. Maybe they should find a dealership and grab all of the Odysseys and Siennas they can.

My guess for Shane turning into a zombie, is that the knife Rick used to stab Shane in the chest was the same one he used to stab the zombie through the chain-link fence with.
Although I guess that doesn't really explain how the kid ended up turning into a zombie after Shane broke his neck...

There's like 15 of then and there seems to be 12 guns, mostly handguns.
If I am Rick, I am maintaining a two to one ratio of guns to people at all times.
They seem to go out scavenging once every episode or two. They also seem to come back empty handed.
Any small southern town that has a pharmacy has a sporting goods store with guns and bullets.
Hell, this is rural Georgia. You should be able to find enough guns by looking for Gun Racks in pickups. /stereotype

They should have taken a economical car and done runs back to the CDC to bring back hummers with mounted guns. Set them up all around the farm house like turrets. Who cares about gas mileage, just have a ton of them sitting around. Ditto for the tanks. Get into a bind, drive over a bunch of Zombies with the tank. It's like Halo. Sometimes you don't want the warthog to drive, but you jump in the back, clear out the bad guys and hop out again.
There's so many fun things I'd like to try - but I guess the story might get a bit too easy if you wrote things like that in.

It blows my mind that in every post apocalyptic mythology, nobody ever thinks to ride a bike or bring one along. Every open road ends with deserted cars that are treacherous at best, unpassable at worst. You can outrun any zombie without breaking a sweat. Much quieter than cars. Don't require fuel. Maintenance is quick and easy. They're literally everywhere.
I think Stephen King's The Stand is the only post-apocalyptic scenario where the characters actually realized they could ride bikes, and they eventually become the primary mode of transportation (as they logically would). But they look dopey on camera and there's probably a lot of administrative nonsense involved with putting actors on bikes, so it never happens ever.

I worry for Daryl Dixon a bit. They show him on his bike in the preview. We all know that Carl took his gun from the side bag and no one told him. What happens when he goes for his gun if needed and it is not there?
