I think it's unfortunate that conceding on an issue has to be perceived as "caving in". It is sort of the same thing, but it just sounds so negative. Personally, I think politicians (especially in a minority government) need to concede on issues in order to make things work. I also don't vote for politicians that I think are going to be so stubborn that they refuse to ever change their minds on anything. It's like if they change their mind or agree to cooperate with another party, they are branded as liars, wafflers or hypocrites, when I think some of the time, they should be applauded for it.

Has the coalition even proposed anything resembling a detailed budget?

You're right they've not so I'll rephrase. The Conservatives will essentially concede the points that the Accord is based on in the budget that they will propose.

Maybe it isn't, maybe it is... but if the optics are there, the damage is done.
Maybe it has nothing to do with the coalition but rather on Harper's lack of a plan. Maybe the TSX would have tanked even further if the Coalition did not hint at a 30 billion dollar stimulus plan?

Or maybe it's because we are in a recession. Kinda kills the markets. If you want to compare Canada vs US. it would be better to compare the S&P 500 then the Dow. 30 stocks! Here they are. Look at the banking component. Bank of America, JP morgan and Citigroup. They make up 10% of the Dow. And they are up today. That could be the difference between the Dow and the TSX right there.

Not so much a budget as a $30 billion spending spree.

So what happens tomorrow when the TSX goes up and the Dow/s&p goes down? Is it because Harper will release a poison pill? hehe

I don't know...I know a guy who predicted that this week was going to be a bad one on the markets. He even started a thread about it here, and with no information that any of this was going to take place, I assure you!

Basically this is like Jr. High where the kids are tired of being picked on and treated badly. The last budgetary announcements were enough to push them to this action. I don't think that they ever go through with it, but are definitely enjoying watching Harper squirm in the meantime.
Hard to disagree. I've always wondered why grown politicians are unable to behave better than school children. I hope they won't go through with it, but I don't have the same faith in the liberals putting the country ahead of themselves as you do. Especially Dion, who may want to use his short time as PM to convince himself he did a good job, even with all the evidence to the contrary.

I just like to think that politicians do try to do the best that they can, no matter which party they are representing. I guess I'm an eternal optimist...

But I don't think they are.

Harper tried to take advantage of the situation to diminish his opposition, the opposition somewhere found a backbone to stand up to him and are going overboard with their coalition.

Frickin' sit them down, tell Harper he stays PM but other than budgets he can not make anything a confidence motion. The Bills stand on their own merits, budgets need the confidence of the house, and GET BACK TO WORK.

I'm impressed, I sent a email to my MLA about my concerns with how this coalition government could affect Alberta interests, and he actually called me back and we had a good conversation about Alberta's role in this.

Color me impressed that my MLA actually reaches out to his constituants.
