I think the Flames have enough exposure to this year’s draft. I’m good with focusing on 25 and beyond.

Not bashing Treliving here, but Conroy isn't taking less just to avoid dealing with his old boss.

The sweetener from Toronto is the question also.

Bob said that the top 20 are in a group and then 21-50.

It seems there’s a divide of sorts between the top 20 on TSN’s list and the next group of as many 20-plus prospects. Famous last words, but it would be shocking if the first 20 on our list aren’t surefire first-rounders. Beyond that, though, the prospects ranked 21-32 would appear to be somewhat interchangeable with those ranked 33 to 50.

Leafs media and fans think they have the right to match any deal before it goes through. Flames made two trades with Vancouver, they don't care about politics they want what THEY THINK is the best deal.
Brad could have had Tanev for a first, might even have won a round.

I'd have preferred the NJD 1st in '25 to TOR's 1st in '24 anyways.
I love the idea of spreading picks across these next three years - so having two 1st rounders in each of 24, 25, 26 is awesome. Also, the TOR 1st is locked at 23rd OA, and there's a cost of opportunity when looking at it over the NJD pick. That NJD has a chance of being 11th-22nd - so I take that upside while also knowing you're going to have a full year to assess the 2025 draft while knowing you have two 1st round picks (most likely).

There is also an early expectation that next year's draft is deeper.
1) a pretty good chance that the NJD pick is better
2) almost certainly less retention
3) Bahl is very intriguing, and only costs $1M this year, while we see how he progresses
TOR's add would have to be a pretty good player (which I highly doubt)

Plus isn't there a rumbling that Toronto and Ottawa were brought in to improve New Jersey's focus but Markstrom was only really willing to go to the Devils?

I think things got a little twisted over time. I think it was reported that Markstrom didn't really want to be traded anywhere, but that he would waive to go to New Jersey. Over time, as rumours form, it became "Markstrom only wants to go to New Jersey".

Same day that was reported, someone reported its dispute
I think he clearly wanted to be in the eat though, for the direct flight to Sweden

Theres also a chance (slim but still a chance) that the devils stumble and that pick ends up being an unprotected 2026. Any extra shots at the Mckenna draft are going to be near impossible to get. Similar to how difficult it was to get picks last year

1) NJD finishes bottom 10 next year. Pick moves to 2026.
2) VGK and NJD finish bottom 10 in 2025/2026.
3) Flames finish last in 2026.
4) Lottery picks go to NJD and VGK draft selections (held by the Flames)
5) Flames draft 1st, 2nd, 3rd overall.

Add Murray Edwards sells the team and Sportsnet fires Eric Francis...and that is the best non-zero chance timeline I can think of.

Based on the Ullmark deal, this Markstrom trade looks great! We get a decent young defenseman, a slightly more promising 1st round pick and no bad contracts coming back

I forgot which insider said it (Dreger? Lebrun?) that Markstrom was 'intrigued' about the Maple Leafs when he heard they were interested. They made it sound like Ottawa wasn't a consideration, however (though maybe it would if Ottawa stated that they would sign Tanev too? I bet that would have made him more interested).

Is it 100% a fact that if the devils finish bottom 10, that we receive their 2026 unprotected pick? If so, damn that’s exciting.

That's what NHL.com is saying, yes.
Subject to lottery results, of course – if the Devils finish outside the bottom 10 but move up due to the lottery, that also means the Flames get the unprotected '26 pick instead.
