But if you're Nylander, and you aren't re-signing with Toronto, who cares where you end up for the rest of this season? If they want to send you somewhere that doesn't interest you, you just walk it to UFA.

Nylander is 18 months younger than Lindholm - not much, but something. And the rest of the return (other than Brodie) is picks and a prospect. Sounds a lot like what you would want if you were retooling. And a lot like what many fans are hoping for.

Yup. Because if he walks, all they get for Lindholm, Hanifin and Tanev is 2 1sts and a prospect - no where near enough.

So it requires prior negotiation with Nylander.

And the problem with that is the same as with Huberdeau - you're signing a long term deal without seeing how he fits with your team.

It's a very intriguing trade, but a HUGE risk for the Flames.

In fairness, it is also a huge risk for the Leafs, as they would have THREE guys to sign.

Alter that original trade so that the Flames are only retaining on two contracts and then flip Nylander with retention at the TDL. I think you could get a pretty hefty return on him.

Even with this trade, a lot has to go right for TOR to win a cup. This trade would greatly reduce their ability to go for a cup in the following 2–3 years. I don't think Tre risks something like that, because when it backfires, then Leafsnation would demand his head.

Tre didn't want to risk Valmaki in order to land Stone, but now he's willing to throw all caution to the wind to get Hanifin, Tanev, and Lindholm?

I also don't think that TOR values Marner better than Nylander at this point. Nor do I think CGY would have a chance of signing Nylander if we trade away all those pieces, because that would in all likelihood mean a full rebuild.

I think that trade would be a big return for Calgary. They are likely getting the best player in the trade in Nylander… he has had the best past two seasons of the players involved. The flames could even immediately trade him at the deadline for a 1st round pick + top prospect. Could even flip Brodie if they wanted to. Would be a big shuffle of two teams. Not sure I’ve ever seen many trades like that but it would be interesting.

Hard to imagine the leafs trading Nylander when they are trying to win now. Even though they are afraid to lose him for nothing.

That's why he'd be an easy flip, especially if there's still an existing retention spot.

Calgary Flames acquire: William Nylander ($6.9M), TJ Brodie ($5M), Topi Niemela, 2024 First Round Pick and 2026 First Round Pick

They would be acquiring Lindholm - an excellent 200 ft C, Hanifin, who would be their #2 defenseman, and Tanev, a guy who Chuck Norris would buy a beer.

If you are going for it, I can't imagine a scenario where you are adding more than that.

If Nylander is hesitant to allow the trade to go through, you just tell him we will flip him 50% retained to a contender or to a team that wants a sign and trade. If Toronto is trading him they don't want to re-sign him. Take the 8 year extension to the highest bidder rather than the 7 at free agency.
