Retention didn't make sense on Zadorov at any point assuming they plan on using three slots. Retaining on Zadorov might get them from a 3rd + a 5th to a 2nd. Retaining on Hanifin, Lindholm, and Tanev might bring back an entire extra pick.
It is about maximizing the value across all trades and keeping them open for the most valuable assets makes the most sense.

Has this been posted?
From Editor in Leaf. Nylander, Brodie, 2 first round picks and a prospect to the Flames for Lindholm, Hanafin and Tanev, which apparently will break the internet and win the Leafs the Cup.
https://flip.it/861X_P
The Trade
Toronto Maple Leafs acquire: Noah Hanifin ($4.95M – Flames retain 50%) & Chris Tanev ($4.5M – Flames retain 25%), Elias Lindholm ($4.85)
Calgary Flames acquire: William Nylander ($6.9M), TJ Brodie ($5M), Topi Niemela, 2024 First Round Pick and 2026 First Round Pick

That is a wild trade.
After giving it a moment's thought, it just might bring the Leafs a cup, and at the same time, is probably good for the Flames, with 2 1sts and a prospect, plus what would turn into a very expensive, but fan favourite, Nylander

The Flames' defense would be completely obliterated, but there would be things to be excited about

I don't see TOR doing that.

They are all in to win a Cup, I could totally see the Leafs doing that.

Only way Nylander coming back makes sense is if we flip him for more assets.

Nobody does realistically, but at least that proposal isn't from Flames land, so nobody can accuse us of overvaluing our own players or undervaluing the Leafs players.

If they don't think they can afford a signed Nylander, they might do it.
They have to decide if they can keep both Nylander and Marner. If they think they can't, this is a great, win now, trade for them.

How so? It makes absolute sense if the idea is a retool which it obviously is. The Flames are not scorched Earth rebuilding here, that isn't going to happen.

Gift of the Magi (sort of?). We get Nylander but don't have the 1C to play him with.

If Toronto was smart they would pay and keep Nylander and put Marner as the one in the package that they are sending out.

I actually don't think it is crazy in the Flames value. Brodie is a dump at this point. Hanifin should be worth about a 1st + two 2nds. Lindholm is worth a 1st + a 2nd. Tanev is worth two seconds or a 1st. Nylander would be a 1st plus two 2nds.
I don't think Toronto does it because it is a lot of moving parts but pretty fair value.

They can't. Marner has a NMC, he isn't going anywhere.

That's obstacle isn't even the biggest issue. It's the "if Toronto was smart" part that makes the move impossible.

Exactly.
Nylander is 18 months younger than Lindholm - not much, but something. And the rest of the return (other than Brodie) is picks and a prospect. Sounds a lot like what you would want if you were retooling. And a lot like what many fans are hoping for.

Nylander would be coming home! Born here. Then we get Makar.
