It's kind of funny, if you sort the 2011 Draft class by NHL points, Gaudreau is currently 13th overall.

Significantly.
He's the only player in the top 17 with fewer than 100 games played, and he has the fewest games played among the top 20 (Baertschi is currently 20th overall in scoring in the draft class).

In the end, he doesn't add to the culture this team is building and I feel like the Flames are better off without him.

If you really want to a pick a point in time where things turned it was probably when Tim Harrison rocked him a rookie camp and he flipped out.

Hodgson career isn't going gang busters, but I doubt he regrets it much. Buyout or not, that trade to Buffalo made him a lot of money.

Bottom line guys ... if the Flames make quick decisions on prospects that aren't developing and garner 2nd round picks in the process they are most likely to be happy what 80% of the time?
Waiting until the whole world knows they are dust and getting next to nothing for them is a lot more painful than Vancouver finding a way to get Baertschi going again.

Even as a 'you done whining yet?' pickup? I see it like letting your kid try swimming on his own before plucking him off the bottom of the pool

Van is going to give him a long rope. I think he will be on the team for at least 3 months. If things aren't clicking for him at all, the Nucks would try and trade him before trying to push him through waivers. If there is no team interested, then I guess they will expose him to waivers. If he does that poorly, he may just pass anyways. However, odds are that one of the bottom teams next year would put in a claim on him - Phoenix, Buffalo.. ahem.. Edmonton! Somebody will put in a claim on him just to see him for free. There is always a GM out there that will throw the dice on an under-performing prospect with that much potential out of junior. Heck, Islanders even tried Shremp.
Baertschi's time is up in Calgary. He was traded away, so it would be extremely doubtful Calgary would trade back for him given his 'refusal to re-sign' threat. Calgary most likely wouldn't be low enough on the waiver wire to beat out some potential interested teams. On top of this, I think it would become more of a distraction than anything else.
Of course, Sven may indeed start turning his game around and be taking enough steps forward that Vancouver is happy with him.
|
This is pretty true. I COULD see Calgary putting in a claim based on what I stated above, but you're right I can't see VAN not trading him (if even for just a 4th) at that point to a team he will crack. No way he doesn't crack Buffalo or Edmonton at this point.
Man, can you imagine Baertschi playing for VAN and EDM? I think that, with the request of a trade will finally rid me of my 'I want Baertschi to be a Flames top-9' complex...

The guy I would like to hear from about all encompassing Sven is Todd Button, the guy that drafted him.

Nope - don't see an "are you done whining yet" pickup. They will have a full slate of prospects at forward after this next draft.
PLus, like I said, he's either not going to be picked up by anyone because his worth will have dropped even more, or one of the bottom feeders will try him as a reclamation.

Why? What insight would you hope to get from him?
Button's job was done when he was drafted, and it's hard to complain about the Flames drafting him when they did.
Compared to the high-ranked players drafted after him, he still looks like the best of the bunch. He had a tremendous season in junior the year after he was drafted. Even his first year in Abbotsford started out really strong until he was injured.
Whatever went wrong between the Flames and Sven, scouting and drafting him aren't the problem.

This is a solid trade for both teams and for Sven himself. It was becoming increasingly obvious that he wasn't a fit in the future of the Flames plans as the Flames have a very solid prospect base that has seemingly better developed the trust of the management. At the same time the Canucks having had the smartest man in the room in Gillis at the helm (at least I am sure that he thought of himself in that manner), had a tendency to draft older players in the draft in the hopes that they would become later round steals, which they obviously did not. The Canucks have been in a position in which their success means that they haven't had the Blue-Chip prospects in the 21-24 year old age range and consequently Benning has had to use draft picks in order to attempt to resupply the cupboard.
Looking at the past near decade the Canucks have had some atrocious drafting with one player currently on the team that has been drafted in that time (Horvat) and one player who they traded for using the selection (Kassian for Hodgson). There are a couple of prospects but no one who really seems capable of stepping in at the current time. Baertschi is the most NHL ready forward that the Canucks have in the AHL at the current time, which is a pretty sad state of affairs.

This whole topic has been beaten to death; but it sure seems like the trade of Glencross would have been he perfect opportunity to give Sven some real minutes, with real quality linemates.
Guess Flames brass had made up their minds in him long ago.
fare thee well Sven.
