Just want to say thanks to all the posters with pix of the 'Dome and the tribute...great for those of us who can't be there in person....
Still, today, the damn onions....
There was hardly a word said among the maybe 25 people present. A wedding nearby on the patio of the BMO center had music loud enough to ease some of the tension.
A few passing glances among those present, plenty of misty eyes.
I’ve never seen that much purple Gatorade in my life.

This broke me. I have no words, just hope that somehow, someway, their families feel even an ounce of the outpouring of support from people all over to help them heal.
The Jackets posted a great video on their youtube page as well (apologies if already posted):

Anyone know what will happen to all the stuff at the memorial when they take it down? I'm assuming the Gatorade and skittles will get donated to the foodbank.
I doubt they get donated, they won't be consumable. Temps are hitting the 30s the next two days.
I just can't help but think if they were just a few minutes or even seconds earlier or delayed on that bike ride, they'd still be here...
May sound out there, but an almost comforting thought for myself is that if there truly is the existence of other/alternate universes out there, Johnny and Matthew continued on their bike rides safely and peacefully, and are now back home celebrating with their family this weekend.

This is the third celebrity death that has hit close to home for me.
The first was when Brad McCrimmon went down in that Russian plane crash. It seemed unreal that ‘Sarge’, whom I remembered so vividly from the '89 Cup run, who served as captain of the Flames and later came back as an assistant coach, just wasn't here anymore.
The second had nothing to do with hockey: Dave Wolverton (who also wrote as David Farland), the well-known fantasy writer. He was a mentor of mine for a while (and mentored a lot of writers you've actually heard of, too, such as Stephenie Meyer, the author of Twilight). Late in 2021 he was hired by a major publisher to start and edit a new fantasy line for them, and I was spoiling for a chance to work with him again. Less than a month later, he fell down a flight of stairs and died of a brain injury. That one still feels unreal (but makes me nervous when I'm going down my own stairs).
This one? What seems to hurt most is the way we all found out about it – from some Joe Schmuckatelli on social media, who had no right to blab about it and no credibility, but turned out to be telling the truth. It took me back to my twenties, when a friend of mine committed suicide. I found out by a phone call the following day, when a mutual friend phoned me:
‘Did you hear about Reed?’ he asked.
‘No, what happened?’
‘He woke up this morning and he was dead,’ said Mr. Tact.
I don't believe in shooting the messenger, but when the messenger makes it about himself instead of the message, I am very strongly tempted. Johnny Hockey deserved better, and his family needed better, than to have his death announced by a self-promoting twerp on the Internet. That made it hurt even worse.

I was reflecting a bit tonight on why this really has been so personally painful compared to other similar tragedies.
And there are a lot of components to it. Johnny growing up in front of us all here in Calgary, the whole scenario with it being his sisters wedding, Johnny having two young kids and Matthew's wife being pregnant, and really just how much the entire family really embraced Calgary and the Flames.
But in the end I think the biggest reason is actually just because of who Johnny was as a person.
He was such an engaging and happy person, that made you feel like you were a part of his life even if it was just through an interview or video clip. His kindness and love for his family, friends, and teammates was always present at all times. As was how much he truly loved and enjoyed playing the game of hockey. Its been mentioned countless times already but his eagerness to be involved in charity work and his interactions with fans (especially young fans) always felt genuine and it never felt like it was something he was being forced to do.
He always just seemed like a genuinely happy and fun person, and naturally engaged everyone around him with that fun personality. And I think because of that we all felt like we knew him and were personal friends with him, even if we had never met him or just met him in passing on a couple of occasions.
The world lost a truly great person way too young, and I think that's what makes this hurt the most because it was so much more than him just being an elite hockey player.

Hopefully they are actually just waking up from this simulation.
One of the users on the r/CalgaryFlames subreddit suggested renaming 13th Avenue, since it will pass right by the new arena. The idea has already gained traction there, I think it’s a great idea.
In what has been an unexpectedly somber and tough week and weekend my band and I found ourselves performing last night live at the Richmond Night Market here in Vancouver (Richmond lol) and though it had been a minute since we had played Johnny B Goode at all let alone live it will be one of my all time musical honours performing that song as the last song of the set in dedication to Johnny and the Gaudreau brothers.
I’ve been playing and performing music with my bros for 25 years and have lived with them my entire life, it’s been just us three and our folks against the world, the Falk fist as we call it, and I think that’s why this has hit me so incredibly hard, I’m still finding myself crying if I even begin to walk down the path of thoughts around how immensely hard this must be for the Gaudreau’s right now.
Love you so much Johnny and Matty, keep being Goode and we’ll play it for ya live when we make it up that way someday.
Haven't seen in posted anywhere but I remember years ago John trademarked "Johnny Hockey" in CAN/US. Hope someone is his business/family side creates some new tasteful swag which can be sold and the proceeds go towards the family (more Matt side) and MADD awareness.

Yeah. Sitting here in vehicle today, killing time between jobs, and I find myself sobbing uncontrollably.
Meredith is clearly a strong, wonderful woman. The little ones are in good hands. Rest easy, boys.

Something I find tough is knowing the, despite all the love shared and now lost to a different timeline, it's inevitable that both Johnny and Matty's widows will move on to build other families that I'm sure will always be a part of the Gaudreau's world, but will actually be separate families outside of the children left behind, who will now have this sort of confusing past family with whole separate grandparents and cousins etc that are only connected to them through fathers they will never know.
Screw that guy and his Jeep.

And he did it because they are such a wholesome family that he had issues with “Johnny ####ing hockey” shirts.

But it does not completely deprive you of the ability to make choices.
This idiot chose to drive.
While I agree that alcoholism is a disease, much like mental illness, the law treats it differently.
Mental illness is a valid defence to a criminal charge, but alcoholism is not (at least not driving offenses).
People who are alcoholic need to deprive themselves of the ability to drive a car, whether than means not having access to a car or even not having a car.
