He should, hope he does. Exact kind of guy you want around for the kids to learn from.
Maybe. Or you can give him a trade friendly contract and flip him again at the TDL. Rinse & repeat. If Dallas doesn't win out, he is still motivated to win a cup.

Yeah term I'm flexible on, could just give him the Stone treatment & keep giving him 1yr deals, but I imagine he'd want a longer deal in case he gets injured.

Or since we wont be close to the cap if we move a guy like Mang, give Tanev 1x$5M
As someone who has had a veritable cornucopia of injuries, many, many ankle injuries...this guy is insane.
"I hopped on the ice, felt something give way, no big deal."
I once went to work after a Men's League game and since I'd walk to work at th time and its winter, I'd wear boots and leave my dress shoes at my office and change when I got there.
And then my foot wouldnt fit in my shoes. Take off the sock and my leg is black nearly to my knee.
"Hm. That doesn't seem ideal."
Weird Pet Peeve: Characters in TV or Movies who roll their ankles and suddenly cant move anymore. Don't sell me that crap! Unless you really destroyed it the ankle still works, it'll hurt, but it works. If its 'Life or Death?' Keep moving!
And Tanev just kept on playing. That guy is a lunatic. I hope we re-sign him.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Besides wanting to resign in Dallas, the Calgary option has sailed and will not going to happen. Tanev wants to win now or at least have an opportunity to compete in the playoffs.

Calgary is not on Tanev’s list of teams

I know. Thats why I used the word 'hope.'
Dallas has a few more shots. Tanev has a few more shots. They're in similar trajectories.
Calgary isn't getting there anytime soon.

I doubt he is coming back but it would make a ton of sense for him.
Sign with a team that can afford to give him 4M and will give a NMC.
Be able to rest and rehab any injuries instead of playing through them fighting for a playoff spot.
Get moved at the deadline to one of his preferred teams at a massively reduced salary allowing them to load up.
Trying to pick a cup winner is tough at any time but it's a lot easier in March than it is on July 1st.

Yeah...but I think he's going to take a place that treated him and his family well and still has a shot at winning.
By all accounts he loved Calgary but we are nowhere close to competing much less within Tanev's career window.
So. He didnt throw the Flames or Calgary under the Bus, so credit to him for that, but we're just not a fit and realistically for his career? Probably never will be.
The Tanev trade is one that I have a lot of respect for.
He went to Conroy and told him that his priority was to win while Conroy was burning the team to the ground. And Conroy respected that.
Thats all I ask for. Honesty. Both Tanev and Conroy have my respect for that.

Yup, its a chance. Double retention, get an asset in trade for salary and leader/mentorship. But he will still try for an Iggy LA contract, you still try to grab your last bag for as long as you can.

It’s not a terrible take, I wonder if there might be more and more players trying this type of approach. There’s a couple of risks. One - the team you sign with out performs and finds themselves in a playoff race, Now the GM doesn’t want to trade you and you are ona team scraping in but not challenging for the cup. The other is some sort of injury around TDL and not getting moved.
Still, would have to think it’s not a bad plan. There’s risks as you point out in picking the winner in July too.
I'm still kind of shocked how little the Flames got for a double retained Tanev. Ouch.
A late 2nd and a guy who had 1 assist in 20 games with the Wranglers.
I thought the perception was that he had a lot of value.

The trade market was weak because the flat cap had left many teams capped out.
And in general, teams are becoming more reluctant to trade away firsts. Young players who can come in and contribute on entry-level contracts are gold in today’s NHL. The reason the Stars were able to ice a contender in spite of the Seguin and Benn contracts is they have Johnston, Stankoven, and Harley on entry-level deals.

I think people would have been fine if it was a 1st + a cap dump which was available but the Flames didn't take it. Hopefully Grushnikov is good
