Appears Sens still trying to sign Stone. Which means no team has even talked to him about an extension. That can’t get done by the deadline tomorrow. I think it is Hayes or nothing.

I watched that game and I could swear it went down like I said, but there it is in black and white.
Was only 10 at the time but I thought it was pretty cool.,as Tonelli was one of the few guys from another team you knew about, becuase of all the times they were on TV in the prior years in the playoffs.I think that was the biggest name.since I could recall up to that point, the the Flames got in a trade. I guess maybe Mullen a few weeks prior, on a Saturday night after a game, was a big one too.
And then to be traded while playing that same team in New York was super weird.

I think it’s more likely a team other then Ottawa is trying to reach an extension before a deal happens

The talk was all how the Flames were taking direct aim at Edmonton with that trade. We know how that went.

"If the Senators go the trade route with Stone, and appears to be the most likely scenario, there no shortage of interest. There’s no question the Winnipeg Jets have made him their No. 1 target while the Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames and Vegas Golden Knights.
It’s believed the Senators want a first-round pick along with two strong assets in return for Stone. Naturally, there would likely be another conditional pick that would depend on either how far the team goes in the post-season or, perhaps, if he’s re-signed by the team that acquires him.
Given the situation, it’s likely Stone will go down to the wire Monday unless somebody steps up to get the deal done Sunday. A league source suggested Friday there’d be as many as eight teams in the playoff race that would be serious competition to try to get Stone.
The pressure on the Senators doesn’t really grow until the final few hours heading into the deadline so if a team really wants Stone then they’ll have to try to step up Sunday to try to make a deal happen earlier."

How are they mutually exclusive?
Ottawa would be smart to try and re-sign Stone while also talking trade with other teams at the same time.
We've heard from multiple sources the Flames are only interested if they can either sign him immediately or at least have the knowledge they'll be able to (IE: talk to Stone and his agent). With that info, we continue to hear Calgary in heavy pursuit.

As a kid, I remember going to the dome with a buddy shortly after this trade. We got a cool shot of Terry Johnson and John Tonelli dressed up after the game.

But we haven't heard that the Sens have allowed anyone to talk to Stone. It would go against their interest to allow other teams to negotiate against them with Stone.

The fun here begins at 3:17 with the Mullen trade and then the Tonelli interview.
In the Edmonton series, again only as 10 years old, but vividly remember that with the Oilers pressing and just over a minute to go and net empty, Tonelli stole puck at the Flames blue line, but as he crossed the redline to go and shoot it in or towards the empty net, his stick broke and the Oilers went into the Flames zone 5 on 4.
Fears were unrealized then, but a very similar scenario was sickening realized on 2004 game 7 vs VCR.
And I recall 1987 at Paskapoo for ski lessons, getting Tonellis autograph as he was randomly there was his family.

Final derailing post of the thread... but as per my above Tonelli empty net story in Game 7 1986, here it is, starting at 19:58.
And that sequence (note Lanny getting wrestled down too) caused confusion and Flames got a too many men penalty.
As a Flames fan in 2019, you cant watch from 19:58 forward from the video and not have your heart race a bit 33 years later...can you imagine what that was like at that time in 1986 given the rivalry and what the Flames were on the verge of?

17:35 is a pretty epic moment in Fames history as well...will never ever ever forget that exact moment in time when that happened....thats when I knew we could beat slay the dragon and derail the dynasty.
