Hanifin is like Bowmeister. A guy that fans here figure isn’t top tier and then he leaves and wins cups and gold medals.

No, the flames need to cash in on his trade value and get younger, better, and get people who want to be a Flame.

All things Noah doesn’t fit.
His value has increased every week for the last 3-4 weeks.
Flames are in a great position, Craig just needs to not push his luck and get a deal done before an injury.

This isn't the way it actually happened according to what I have heard. He was absolutely going to sign that extension and it was the Flames who decided to back off it because the team was not playing well. If things continue to trend the way they have been recently I expect that deal to get signed without a trade after, despite what LeBraun is reporting. Everything I am hearing is that Hanifin prefers to stay in Calgary now.

That’s an interesting wrinkle if true. Definitely assumed that Hanifin was the one who pulled out.
I’m still glad there is no smoke around the Lindholm camp. Although my expectations on a trade return are now hoping someone pays the same as what Horvat got. Doesn’t even look like a low end #1 right now.

Depends i guess. A lot of teams don't really have top pairing guys on their team, so he would be an upgrade for them. Off the top of my head:

Oilers
Arizona
Wild
Blues

Hanifin is automatically top pairing on those teams. Sorry your team made the list, but you know he would.

I am also hearing Toronto is pushing very hard to get a deal for Tanev done. Tre wants 50% retention though, not sure Conroy has the appetite for that. No idea what the Flames would want in return.

It makes sense to keep him. The Flames don't have players in the system projected as a top 3D and he is 26 years old.

I would like to see some consistency of direction from the Flames though. Zigging and Zagging based on preseasons and 10 game sample sizes is a little concerning.

exactly, he's top pairing on a lot of teams...include Toronto to the above list also.

Not sure why you would trade Tanev right now. His value if only going up and the Flames don't have antone else to pair with Hanafin.

The only downside of keeping him until the deadline is the risk of injury, but that's a fair risk to take unless an offer is to good to refuse.

I would have no problem with them keeping Hanifin and trading Lindholm and Tanev. Dmen take the longest to develop and the Flames have few, if any, in the system that look like they could be top 4 dmen. Try to get a haul for Tanev and Lindholm and rebuild through the draft with a solid top 3 on the backend.

Not trying to bash your intel but it doesn’t make sense to me. You are saying hanifin wanted to stay, was offered a huge contract, and for some reason didn’t jump at the chance to sign it? During this time that he was too busy to sign contract flames pulled out?

The other part seems plausible. I could see him signing contract if flames continue to play well.

If flames want great value on trading tanev then eating 50% is the way to go.

Does this refute what Ruttiger said though?

He said that Hanifin isn't going to have value of a #1 defenseman because of a short stretch where he has played well. The fact he could play on the top pair of some of the weakest bluelines in the league isn't going to make other teams overpay for him.

He has a long history of what he is as a defenseman and that is what will determine his value more than anything.

What are you talking about? 32 teams. 64 positions for top pairing guys. If you don't have one of those guys in the top 64 like deadmonton and you want one? Then you go pay for one.

I'm not going to explain market price theory, but here's the short of it: You want to sell shares in a company? You sell to the highest bid in the market which is the buyer who wants it most/wants to pay the most. That's the bid price you see when you check your brokerage account.

I am talking about that listing 4 teams that have the weakest defense groups in the league isn't going to change the fact that teams are going to rate Hanifin for his play over his career not a short period of time. That was the point of the post you quoted.

You don't need to explain anything but you have explained how one team, the team we are least likely to trade with, might be willing to overpay for Hanifin, that has nothing to do with the post saying teams aren't overpaying for a player based on short period of good play like Ruttiger said in his post.

The way Tanev plays, injuries are always a risk the closer you wait until trade deadline. Toronto is pushing hard now, dealing with injuries of their own.
