That would be an awesome return for Hanfiin

With a contact of $4.95 million per year (backloaded), he needs to bring more than just forechecking. Small players also just don't wear down offense the way a large player does. Garland doesn't hit.
I don't see Garland being a better option than guys like Ruzicka and Duehr, but costs far more. I don't see what Flames player Garland is an upgrade on.

Not trying to be that guy but can you point to the podcast or tweet where he brings this up? I'd like to listen.

July 2022 The Islanders gave the 13th overall pick to Montreal for Romanov and the 98th overall pick. If this was the Flames I'd be a little choked we traded the 13th for the kid and are now trading him and another first AND more.
But that would be a fantastic return as I wouldn't expect the Islanders 1st to be lower than 20ish.

Nelson is a bit tricky to evaluate.
He was coming up as a dman and then switched to a centre last year. He's got really strong physical attributes and some skill. And he's had a strong start this year, again keeping in mind, centre is still new to him.
I think it would be a great acquisition, and the type of guy who may have higher potential than what he has shown to this point.
Even if he ends up being a 3rd line centre that's valuable. But he could be more

That’s a pretty exciting rumour, thanks Sandman.
Wouldn’t there be a Hanifin sized contract coming back?

But I’d kinda prefer the Flames dealt with another team unless no one else is offering a 1st or something? I think the
Flames should be able to get a haul for Hanifin at the deadline if they remain a playoff bubble team.

Nelson is having a great start to his freshman year at Notre Dame. 12 pts in 14 games (2nd on the team) on a very low scoring Irish team. Looks like a big playmaking center with some bite. Agree the Isles don't have much in their cupboard, but Nelson is intriguing.

That's true but it looked like an overpay at the time.
Romanov's game seems very similar to Z, but without the shot or ability to lead the rush. Big hits, physical play, rollercoaster at his own end. He's only 23 and can be a good replacement for Tanev/Z, but Huska would need to tighten up his defensive game.

Why are some always wanting to throw Dube away? Local kid, contract is fine for what he brings, unlikely to upgrade significantly, still has upside, constantly doing the extra representation at local charity events etc. and by all accounts he loves it here.
Is it just the grass is greener? Makes zero sense to me, you hang on to that guy.

Romanov is only 23 and a minute muching D man. To me hes a longterm tanev replacement. D first guy that wont put up a ton of points but can make those safe passes out. He would probably make a great future pairing with an offensive first guy like Poirier.
1st + romanov + wahlstrom/hplmstrom/dufuour/danny Nelson would be a really solid return.
Plus islanders 1st has a chance of being a really good 1st.

Romanov is pretty meh.
Can we all agree to put D Nelson from now on at least lol. Brock Nelson is also on the Islanders, and almost scored 40 goals the past two seasons. We're not getting him as an add in in a hanifin trade.
Danny Nelson- much more reasonable target. Not bad stats, big boy. I'd take a look. The real prize is the 1st and hopefully you get it with no conditions.
IMO Hanifin does not make the islanders an instant contender. Risky for them to trade the 1st.

The only shortish term contracts around Hanifin size are Dobson (pretty unlikely) and Palmieri ($5m for this year and next year).
But the Isles currently have almost $4M in cap space so they could dump a $2.5M guy like Romanov and make it work.

Brock Nelson is a good player but also 32 years old and $6M for a couple years. I think he fits their window so they keep him at that price. And he doesn't add much for the Flames.

He doesn't have upside, he is what he is, a good 3rd line energy guy. At his current salary he is fine, his contract is up though so it depends what he wants. Anything over 3M and I would cut bait.

First of all the xGA went up significantly when then Dube was on the ice. He looks lost offensively and defensively at times which makes me question his hockey IQ, because he has all the other tools in place.
Second there are only 12 forward spots: Huberdeau, Backlund, Coleman, Kadri, Sharangovich, and Mangiapane likely take 6 spots next year. Lindholm is a question mark. That leaves 5-6 spots for: Zary, Pospisil, Pelletier, Coronato, Dube, Ruzicka, Greer, Duehr, Honzek, and Klapka to fight for. It's hard to figure out who will be the guys out, and Dube has the highest caphit of the bunch.

I wasn't actually opining on B Nelson's value, just the obvious confusion one could have reading a whole page of "Nelson" talk to the flames from the islanders.

It’s not like Dube led the (non-Toffoli) team in 5v5 scoring last year.
Oh wait, never mind, he did. His overall game is nothing special but I’m not rushing to push him out the door for no value.
