It’s basically absurd to think people can’t improve their skating
As a naturally fast person, I have trouble wrapping my mind around someone being unable to simply move their legs quickly when needed. Particularly athletes that train.
Sounds arrogant, but on the other hand I'm like.. what gives. Just practice moving one foot in front of the other and give it some mustard. Why can't you do that when you have friggin elephant's thighs.
I don’t recall Keith being slow, except when he was out of shape. And Brady can skate OK. I just look at Tkachuk and he skates in a weird position so part of me thinks that can be addressed. I’m not saying he will be a speed demon, but in pro sports a little improvement can go a long way.
What is with the silly pointless memes that often aren't even hockey. Man some of those are dumb and I don't consider your Hockey points any more important because you stuck a dancing Penguin, dumb movie clip or something else stupid.
Its particularly dumb when you answer the posts and the stupid things carry on post after post.
Children aren't capable of writing legibly so perhaps that's the explanation.
Sorry they had to let you go, Ward.

Not as easy as you make it out to be. A lot of it is genetics.
Some people have slow twitch muscle fibers...some have fast twitch.
Yes, you can improve skating style but it is very very difficult to overcome genetic deficits.
I didn’t make it out to be easy. Of course every person has genetic and physiological attributes that predispose or limit them
But there is definitely a lot of time you can spend on mastering skating technique and definitely room for a lot of NHLers to improve their skating as well . (These aren’t things they tend to work on in Flames practices)
There are lots of things elite skaters do that they clearly have worked on a lot with attention to detail, and countless reps. Mechanics of the stride. Vertical crossovers and focusing on weight transfer.
I saw a video where they called attention to how when Jack Eichel strides, off the push, he lands on his front skate on the outside edge. It’s counterintuitive but makes sense when you think about it.

It's not about the size it's about the type of muscle fibers, you might be naturally fast because you have good fast-twitch muscles, some people have genetically more and others need to train each muscle group a lot to achieve them. Even in world class athletes this can take a long time.
Take a look at our relatives, a male or female chimpanzee pound for pound is about 1.5x stronger than a man and 2x stronger than a woman. Why? Because Chimps have about 70% fast-twitch muscles compared to 40% for humans.

Thank you for this actually. Did not know the physiology side of 'fastness' and how that works.
Lol I guess that makes McDavid a close relative of a chimp? Explains a few things.

Damn you Flames. The 11th hour on the season and possibly the core and you take us from utter hopelessness to talk of the cup just like that overnight with one, swift move.
You beautiful SOBs.

I've always had the philosophy that a player's skating at the time they are drafted tells you what kind of skater they will be for the entirety of their career. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, and skating is a skill that can be improved, polished, and cleaned up, but for the most part-a bad skater will never turn into a burner. I'm sure Chucky has spent oodles of time working on his skating since he turned pro, but he will never be a great skater.
I told myself I wouldn't get my hopes up again, but like a fool, I've fallen back in love with this team.
I'm preparing now. The beard starts today in anticipation of a playoff run. I hope to be Mike Commodore levels by the time the playoffs start, and ol' prospector levels by the time the playoffs are over.
But of course with my luck, the Flames will run into the Panthers in the final and lose in 7 games.
Draisaitl really improved his skating at about the same age. Chara, Boyle, Mark Stone, Mike Peca too. Perhaps he knows but because he’s been able to get by on his other skills Tkachuk hasn’t ever really tried hard (though I knows he’s gone to Dawn Braid at least once for a session). But it’s caught up with him now. He may never be a great skater but I bet he can improve it some more.

I have no idea where your original post is, but I would agree that speed is something that can be improved. Another player I would add is Brayden Point. It is not as apparent at the NHL level as he really seemed to put the work in after his draft year on skating in particular, but he made a real jump between 18-22 in terms of speed. I have watched the kid since first year Bantam, and while he was always the smartest player on the ice and had the best hands, his skating was the weak point comparing his speed from Bantam through junior with his peers. You watch him now and he can skate with or is better than 90% of the league.

Yes a few players improve there skating over time however I don't recall any "slug" suddenly becoming a speed demon.
Scotty Bowman is quoted as saying " I can teach a good skater to play hockey but I can't teach a good player how to skate.
Ya ya because Spiderman and Simpsons reminds everyone of Hockey. Don't let it bug you though...I mostly only pop in to read once in a while and I just blow past memes and don't bother reading any "point" the meme crowd makes anymore than I ever read those 10 paragraph "manifestos" other guys are compelled to write.
BTW do you "meme" children also "tweet"? 280 characters is about the high end speed for the memer set here.
Anyhow gotta go to work and visit some serious websites.
Nobody cares what you think
