Reiki is one of those baloney "energy healing" things, like "healing touch" and the like. If she truly believes that people listening to whale sounds in the dark while waving their hands to remove negative energies, you might have trouble convincing her that vaccines are important.

Sorry.

Maybe this was covered, but if one parent is pro-vax and one is anti-vax, who gets final say? Personally feelings aside, can the pro-vax person just go get the vaccinations for the kid and there is no legal type issue?

There are lots of stories out there of parents who didn't get their child vaccinated to tragic results, who then go public urging people to vaccinate. Maybe some of those would open her eyes on it?

She has recently started Reiki(dont really know much about it but she enjoys it). It's great that she enjoys it but now after talking to the people in her Reiki circle she's all anti-vax. She says that vaccines are manufactured and brings up her point (from the book Anastasia by Vladimir Megre)

"fruits are designed to sustain man's life. More powerfully and effectively than any manufactured drugs of the present or future, these fruits are capable of counteracting and withstanding any disease of the human body."

I just don't really know where to start with her, it seems everything I say is just in one ear out the other...Also her other argument is she "feels" its not right(what a garbage argument, I know).
NOVA on PBS had a good series on vaccinations if she is willing to watch a video. I really liked this part that shows how vaccines work (in two minutes):

One article to summarize that vaccines work:

No they're not, they're designed to make more fruits...

Be careful with an argument with a spouse about this kind of thing... winning an argument when the position isn't reasoned into in the first place sometimes isn't worth it, since if it's a position someone identifies with emotionally (like something they share with a group of friends) then it's very possible superior evidence will push them further into their belief, or resent you for trying to undermine their belief, etc.

You know your wife best, just saying sometimes it's not worth making an issue over.

Because it's vaccinating kids though that's more difficult since there's an actual heath issue involved.

Anti-vaxxers can be irrational and suspend logic so it can be difficult to reason with them. I worked with a really bright guy who had a scientific educational background and worked in a science related role and even he turned anti-vax. I dont know why and whether it was him or his wife that initiated their position. They did not vaccinate any of their kids and relied on homeopathic medicines instead. Its scary that so many otherwise normal people can hold these beliefs especially where their decisions impact society overall and not just their kids.

I'd play along with her as though what she is saying is making a lot of sense for you. Pretend to be on board. Then I'd make sure to be at the first doctor appointment with the baby and ask the doctor's thoughts on not vaccinating. Let the doctor be the 'bad guy'. Then I'd push for vaccinating the kid citing the doctor as the reason.

This accomplishes a couple of things. It shows you care about what she cares about. It illustrates to her you're just after the best information. Hopefully she can see your mind changing in the doctor's office, and it prompts a change in her, too.

If that fails I'd vaccinate the kid anyway behind her back and let the chips fall where they may. I'd never let stupidity run anything in my house.

Sounds like my pro-homeopathy, anti-vax sister-in-law. She is also into Reiki, in fact, she gets paid to teach it and clients pay for he to travel all over the place to hold Reiki classes.

I remember when she tried to convince one of their relatives with cancer to forget chemo and go full on Reiki and herbs.

Thankfully my wife doesn't buy into it.

Not really. You just write of those kinds of people as potential marriage options right off the bat. And you sure as hell shouldn't be reproducing with those kinds of people, you're just asking to have your offspring to be Darwin'd.
