In that same time period in 1980, how many kids died from other unnatural causes in the lower BC mainland? That’s the only way you can properly put a stat like yours into context and decide where to expend your energy protecting your children.
Are they more likely to be abducted by a serial killer, or are they more likely to be fatally struck by a car while riding their bike on the street in front of your house. My guess is bike riding is more fatal than serial killers every year.

Kids grow up and kids change. Parenting is one aspect of many influences that shape a person. If a 13 year old kid is spouting off, does that mean they'll do it when they mature? Not necessarily. There will always be good people, bad people, nice people, stupid people, jackass people, hilarious people... just because you were raised a certain way, doesn't mean other ways are wrong. That's all I'm saying.

Probably has a lot to do with people always flipping houses trying to make a profit rather than settling into an area and developing a sense of "it takes a village to raise a child" enviroment.

I decided it was time to stand my ground with him when I was 17, and it was probably the only time I was justified in fighting back. I would say I "won" the fight from a who beat up who perspective, but it damaged our relationship for years, and felt like the biggest loser ever for doing it. Even he admits, he was a little too hard with me to this day, but with my behavioral issues as a kid, he didn't know what else to do, as I couldn't be reasoned with. However leaving home that young and being forced to survive on my own, was the best thing that happened to me, and I look back on it now as a godsend. I didn't have time to live under my parents roof scheming up diabolicle plans on their dime, putting food on the table and paying rent was first and foremost, priorities changed.... fast.

Call me cynical, but good parenting should not result in a fist fight at age 17. I'll take today's parenting over that, any day.

Also, in 107 posts, no one has stated the obvious. Krista is hot
Her kid on the other hand is a fine candidate for 'unschooling'.

If I want to "waste" a sick day to take my parents to the Dr, then I should be able to.

Like any good thing the employers do trust the employees. But then there's abuse and after awhile companies are fed up and are strict to everyone.

With the privacy and discrimination laws being what they are, is a company going to risk opening itself up to a lawsuit by prying too hard into your personal life?

Same thing, I agree it's good in theory until someone calls in sick or shows up late over and over again.

Hilarious, I know Mike O'Kane via the Calgary business community. He's always appeared like a guy that would eat meat with a meat-by-product then have a beer followed by a mik chaser after a workout. At least the guy I've met in business settings. So weird to see him tied with this story.
I haven't met the wife so I am guessing that on top of the good looks and huge ring on her finger that she is behind this. They are getting grilled on CP and the Herald. Poor guy!
I laughed really loud at one of the Herald comments: She looks like Alans wife from 2 and a half men. probably acts like it as well

This thread reminds me of one of my greatest gear grinders. People that complain about the things that other people get away with in the workplace. Except that they never complain to the people that have been empowered to do anything about it. Honestly, I swear they're creating drama just for the sake of creating drama. And I don't find it particularly shocking that it's a chick bringing it up here. Seriously, get over it, or do something about it.

My Dad was awesome. He taught me how to play hockey, how to fish, how to live in the wild on my own, how to play soccer, how to be a man, how to work my arse off, how to throw a curveball, how to be a father, how to be a husband.
I was never scared of him. We never went through a period when we wouldn't speak to each other. He never beat me unreasonably. We never had a fist fight.
I turned out alright.
I'm glad your fathers worked out for you, but I wouldn't trade what I had for what you had in a million years.

In a thread where fistfights with the old man at the age of 17 is glorified, I thought it was appropriate.

Just think how much better it would have been if he was your friend too. I hope if you have children that you are as great as your dad was but you also are a friend to your children.

So, what’s a worried parent to do? Barnes has a simple prescription: helmets and seatbelts. Yup, that’s right, helmets and seatbelts. "I know it sounds boring," she says, but according to her research, making kids wear protective gear and buckle up in the car cuts kids' chances of death by 90 percent and their chances of serious injury by 78 percent.

I saw a broken down school bus on Southland today. Should we call in the army and institute martial law?

Once we get the DART team down on the ground they can assess if any additional assistance required. Though we might need to send a couple chinooks home from Afghanistan to ferry the survivors back to civilization.
