With a very maneuverable fighter and the ability to Cobra or Yo Yo on both a horizontal or vertical plane you can take advantage of an overly aggressive opponent.

But I agree, probably not the best move to use if someone is sitting on your six locking on a heat seeker from range.

I still don’t think you’d be able to perform a maneuver with as many g’s involved as a cobra with any weaponry on the hardpoints though.

Video game reality notwithstanding, of course.

I'm not saying you can, to me the ability to move your cone of fire without changing direction is a big advantage, which is something like the Cobra or a vector engined fighter has the ability to do.

I do agree that the Cobra is an airshow move more then anything else, the old axiom that speed is life in fighters is thrown out the window with a maneuver like the Cobra that bleeds all of your speed off.

But I can see where a maneuver like that would work against a really aggressive or confident opponent.

Of course my flight experience is in Wing Commander where spinning is a really effective move.

Radar/Heat seeking missiles have ruined the art of dog fighting, too bad because these new fly-by-wire fighters are something to behold.

The Cobra is like doing a barrel roll to this puppie. Amazing aircraft.

Heres a link of it doing a perfect straight line Cobra

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Soviets were the first to come up with the system where the pilot had to simply look towards a target with their helmet to aquire a missile lock.

I think the SU-27 was the first to have this feature, I think it was limited to a certain range of degrees off the nose however (you couldn't check your six and get a missile lock for example).

Edit: Found some info on Wikipedia

Quote:
The first operational jet fighters with HMD (Su-27 and Mig-29) were fielded by the Soviet Union[says who?]. After observing the ACEVAL/AIMVAL, they embarked on a crash program to counter the technology. As a result, the MiG-29 was fielded in 1985 with an HMD and a high off-boresight weapon (AA-11 Archer/R-73), giving them an advantage in close in maneuvering engagements.
