The best part about this story is that they've been videotaped and are going to be publicly humiliated. I can't think of a better deterrent for someone in that age group. A $750 fine? Chances are they can pay it without even blinking. Face on TV? That's where teh real punishment lies. Quite the opposite when it comes to a teenager. So, puckluck, I completely and totally disagree with your sentiment.
As for the lazy, cheap a-holes that use dumpsters for their couches and mattresses, I wont go so far as to suggest you deserve to be hung, drawn and quartered, but if you think that you're an honest person after doing that, you're wrong. You know full well that someone has to pay to dispose of your garbage. So why isn't it you?
And don't give me that bull about it being unlocked and therefore it's free to use. I've locked my bins before and the result is that the leave the couch beside it instead of in it. F****** jerks.

It does not matter how old or young one is. If you do something wrong and you know that what you are doing is committing a crime (especially if many signs are posted all over the place) you take your lumps.
In fact, the older you are the more you should know better! So with this in mind if your sixty I say LIFE IMPRISONMENT! The only possibility for parole is extensive garbage pick up and school appearances teaching the young about how littering is next to homicide. It makes sense.
I feel sympathy for the older people because they actually have built a life around their reputation, and it's all going to be squashed with one mistake. I'd hate to be a 60 year old walking into my work the next day after the whole office just seen your 15 minutes of shame on the local news station.
He's probably more like 65 or more by the looks of it and may be retired.
This probably isn't the first time he's done it. He's probably been doing that kind of thing most of his life just like his father before him.
It sucks to be him to be the only to be filmed today among all the s in the world but that's the chance you take when you are very knowingly dumping garbage in public parks.

There is no difference. I thought I made that clear with that teenage punk sentence. No difference in crimes but I still feel bad they are being humiliated. Probably hypocritical of me, but I wouldnkt feel sympathy if It was teenage punks being humiliated.
Fair enough and thanks for being honest. I just wasn't sure what the deal was with that last sentance in your post.
Personally I think it is awesome that they would do that to anyone, young or old, because it may make the next person think twice about doing it. Imagine how embarassing that would if your grand kids saw that surfing on CP!

I actually think that this could be a huge step in detering people from illegally dumping their stuff so in the end this could be the best possible outcome. I still feel bad though, but I guess it could be for the greater good.

I totally agree, can you imagine whats going to happen the next time they show their faces around the Legion? Or Wednesday Canasta? They're going to be Pariahs!

I have to side with the people that say they deserve to have their pictures plastered everywhere. Right or wrong it's the way things go these days. Within minutes of any news story there are photos and videos everywhere. If someone is taken in to custody their pic is all over the news, papers and web. Doesn't matter if proven guilty or not. If there is a fire or disaster, we see all kinds of images of people in pain and devastation. These people have been taped breaking the law. The video shows guilt. I personally would rather have the faces of these folks in the paper than that close up of a devasted family who has just lost their home.

I'll be interested to see what happens with these two. Their littering has been made VERY public and the punishment could be quite sever and used as a deterrent. I does not matter where you come from, because when you're in Canada you need to know the rules. Keeping our country green is what is most important for most of the public.
Unbelievable! We have the black waste bins here in Lethbridge and it drives me absolutely nuts when people have them jammed full with recyclables hanging out. I put my bin out once every three weeks and even then its because its starting to stink and not because its full.
Which brings me to my next question? The Blue box program in Calgary, do youhave to pay extra for it? Do you have to seperate your recyclables?

This was the weirdest thing ever when I moved from Victoria to Calgary. I remember saving all my cans, cardboard and paper just to find out there is no where to even recycle it even if I wanted to. I had people at Safeway laugh at me when I brought in my case of empties for refund.

You know what else is weird? When you moved from Victoria to Calgary, your toilet flushes stopped being dumped straight into the ocean.
You know what's stupid? The Calgarians least likely to have a vehicle are the ones who don't get their recyclables picked up. That's right folks, if you live in an apartment or condo, unless the building management is particularly environmentally conscious, you're responsible for getting your recycling to the blue bins.
