Oh wow, like we don't subsidize nearly every other sector in this country.

If there's one thing on this seal hunt thing that I think we need to be completely fair about is that we need to start announcing economic sanctions for Europe's animal treatment around furs and things like Fois Gras or however you spell it. Canada needs to get a bit meaner on the world stage when it comes to dealing with holier then thou Europeans and even American's and start telling these people to cram it with walnuts.

It always seems like its an exclusive thing whether its the environment or whether its the sealing industry or whatever.

Maybe we should up the percentage points on loans going out to European companies from Canadian banks. "sorry fellows you tried to f%%k us on the Oil sands or on sealing, so we've put on our dong bags and we're going to split you wide open on the economic dealings between our countries.

Captains have first dibs on anything food coming out of the galley, you're free to let me know how that tastes.

Alas... I'm Chinese of the Banana variety (yellow out, white in). I'd be up for trying seat meat, doesn't look especially bad next to some of the other game meats I've had in Banff.

Okay, I'll admit that I'm wading into waters that I don't understand very well, or as Nufy rightly points out I haven't researched extensively.

So, instead of trying to come off like a know it all, as a discussion point I would say this... Sure, we subsidize most industries. But is the ratio of cash spent to return to the economy normally as slanted as in the seal industry? By all accounts I can find, the sealing industry seems to be of the order of 5-10 million dollars. The amount of money being spent in subsidies seems to be the same or greater. Things like farming and oil and gas must have impacts on the economy in billions of dollars. Are we subsidizing them at the same amount or greater as we do with the seal industry? Seems unlikely.

I think its a catch 22..

Would we have to spend that amount of money of there wasn't such opposition to the hunt ?

If the protestors went away and the subsidies / lobbying were reduced the seal hunt would be profitable again.

Seal pelts used to be a high value commodity but through pressure from protest groups the value has fallen.

I respects everyones right to have an opinion. But sometimes we need to look at the bigger picture.

I eat chicken and cow meat and own a leather jacket, why would I be against the seal hunt?

Exactly... I don't think killing a seal is any less inhumane than strapping a cow to a conveyor belt, slowly transporting the it in and having it struggle and panic when it finally smells all the blood coming out of the slaughter house... If anything I think the seals have less time to react, less painful deaths.

Industrial farming commits far greater number of animal abuses cases than sealing does for sure.
