Like Avatar? How? District 9 was actually a good movie, Avatar was horrible.

No, Avatar was a basic storyline with mind-blowing effects.

I wouldn't be surpised if most of the symbolism in District 9 went unrecognized by most viewers.

I thought effects were pretty standard.

I do agree that it wasn't necessarily the best movie. It was a lot of fun to watch, and it was one of the freshest feeling movies I've watched in a while.

As for the symbolism, it smacked you in the face so I'm not sure how it could be missed.

There are quite alot of people in the world that exist only in their own little bubble and have no idea of what is going on in the world around them.

I was having a conversation about District 9 with a guy and as I was talking about how the movie paralleled Apartheid , I was shocked when he didn't even know what I was talking about

Ya no kidding. The fact it was in South Africa should've been enough right there. Great movie btw, my fav of the year...though I still need to see Hurt Locker.

I've encountered that as well, I watched District 9 with a guy who had no idea what apartheid was when I started talking about it and this was a U of C graduate with a B.A.

I don't really know what to take from that, certainly not any moral superiority or anything. Some people just for some reason, miss certain things while they may be intelligent and well versed in others.

A newer generation would have heard less of apartheid than an older generation and these are just significant cultural and world history events in our popular western lexicon but there are certainly many other such things in different cultures and countries that we have no idea about.

There are many instances of systematic and decades long social injustice and suffering that have existed in other parts of Africa and in Asia and the rest of the world, etc. throughout human history that most people don't know about or will never hear about.

Lethal Weapon 2 gave me my first exposure to South African apartheid.

Twenty years later District 9 does it again.

Both are great movies.
