I've encountered that as well, I watched District 9 with a guy who had no idea what apartheid was when I started talking about it and this was a U of C graduate with a B.A.
I don't really know what to take from that, certainly not any moral superiority or anything. Some people just for some reason, miss certain things while they may be intelligent and well versed in others.
A newer generation would have heard less of apartheid than an older generation and these are just significant cultural and world history events in our popular western lexicon but there are certainly many other such things in different cultures and countries that we have no idea about.
There are many instances of systematic and decades long social injustice and suffering that have existed in other parts of Africa and in Asia and the rest of the world, etc. throughout human history that most people don't know about or will never hear about.
