Haha, really? She rarely covers anything outside the American borders, and has far more pressing news to cover, such as the paternity tests of all those fundamentalist Christian children in Texas...

no kidding. And if the victims of this awful tragedy were non-Canadians you could bet Glenn Beck would get in there too to make some kind of idiotic point about immigrants/non-citizens.
Anyway, this is a really sad story. Those poor little kids...

I didn't know Mr. Lall personally, but he's definitely known where I work (another big architectural firm here in Calgary)... needless to say, I've had to answer a few questions regarding this already.
This has been a strange 6 months in the industry. :S

I too have a meeting at Cohos later today.

A few items to take from this to try and make some good come from so much bad:
- Everybody remember to hug your loved ones a little more tonight, and every night.
- Guys; it's OK to ask for help. So many times we adopt a locker room mentality of "suck it up." In relationships that isn't the best way to handle it. If you are not comfortable confiding in a friend or a family member, then there are other places available to help you out. Just had a look and found one number for a distress centre for men. Their number is (403)266-HELP/4357. Website is http://www.distresscentre.com/Default.aspx
- If you do find yourself thinking there is no way out, then stop, think of how this event turned out. Remember this incident, and that no matter how bad this family's problems were, now they are a lot worse for a lot more people.

Joshua's father, Dominic Lall, said he and his wife were scheduled to fly to Calgary last night from their home in Ontario to check on Joshua, who was distraught when he called his parents a few days ago.
"He told us something was wrong -- he had a mental breakdown or something," said Dominic, breaking down in tears on the phone while he and his wife watched the grisly scene unfold at their son's home on the news

Don't think it could be much worse for his parents. Feeling so helpless so far away.

In a high profile case like this one I always wonder just how many co-workers, peers, friends, and even family find out over the news
That would just be an awful way to be notified of such a tragedy

This is so unfortunate....you know the question is going to arise that if the parents knew he was distraught why didn't they seek help immediately from someone in Calgary until they could arrive? As a parent myself I can't even imagine what was going thrugh his mind or the parents mind now, I am not questioning what the parents did or didn't do one bit, but you know someone analyzing it may wonder why steps weren't taken immediately until the parents could arrive from Ontario. Very very sad day in Calgary.

I'm sure the cops withheld names until the family was notified.

There was the actual address in the first few news reports before it was changed to the 5000 block.

The media should be hung out to dry if there were stupid enough to include actual addresses before the family was notified.

Really, given the magnitude of this event. Is there a good way to be notified of something like this? I dont think a phone call telling you that your kid and his family has all been killed would take any of the sting away.

I think you either trivialize the comments as a momentary thing, or you hope/expect that your son is already seeking remedy. Unfortunately, I have some personal experience with this type of thing.
My aunt decided to leave her husband for another guy. He became very depressed, and was even openly contemplating suicide. Nobody actually believed he would attempt it, but rather was just expressing frustration over his marriage falling apart. I remember my mom even angrily mentioning that suicide was one thing she could never forgive.
My aunt chose to remain in their house over xmas for the sake of their kids. Her husband didn't commit suicide, but instead killed her before turning himself into police. A lot of us have wondered since then what we could have done differently.
Incidentally, one of my cousins was asleep in that house when the murder happened. Incidents like this one in Dalhousie make me appreciate - if that is the right word - that we only buried an aunt and not an entire branch of the family.

To put some faces to the victims:
http://network.nationalpost.com/np/b...ly-photos.aspx
It's hard to imagine what would make someone do this. Obviously marital and financial problems come to mind. Sometimes illness can make someone do this (someone finds out they are terminally ill). Not applicable here, but in some places, the looming threat of war makes people kill themselves and their families.
An interesting comment at the bottom:

You can bet your bottom dollar that divorce lawyers were actually involved, creating and manipulating conflict by threatening loss of children and perpetual servitude based purely on psychiatric speculation, innuendo and lies OR, on the horizon.

That is entirely speculation, and misguided. Family lawyers are trained to minimize conflict and consider the impact of the process on the welfare of the children. Many cases are resolved in a collaborative format. If couples want to beat each other up in court, it is their choice, but most family lawyers I know would rather avoid an adversarial court battle if possible.
