Stiffer penalties?
Cameras all over the place? That wont prevent crimes, but it will capture the evidence. All the privacy freaks will of course cry foul here.
Too bad people this young have to die this way. RIP.

Stiffer penalties arent the answer for murder sucide.
and there is not alot you can do about crimes like this.
but there are certianly things an individual can do , to avoid being in this situation.
But if the facts in this case are similar to the situation in Victoria BC, like restraining orders etc...

Regardless of what you do, you'll never be able to eradicate crimes like this. When somebody snaps and commits a horrific crime of passion, which this seems to be, the furthest thing(s) from their mind would be the penalty they'll face, let alone security cameras watching them.

Must mean that the guy who did it committed suicide.
I don't think you're ever truly going to stop crimes like this. The guy was probably just a normal guy, who blew it and resorted to violence. I think the only thing we CAN do is to teach people to be more aware of their situation, and I hate saying it....but telling them to learn how to defend themselves. Such knowledge might not have helped this situation, but there are others that it may help prevent.
Truly sad though.

One article says it was the couple and another woman--could it be the wife going nuts on the man and his lover? Doesn't really matter, but it would have been expected for it to be the husband doing his wife and lover, but obviously this is a different situation.
Either way, very sad.

Frick, why didn't they just leave the kids out of it?
Brutal monstrosity either way, but even someone in a murderous rage can see the innocence of the children?

I was watching this story on the news tonight, they said a guy ran through police lines at the scene and was tackled by police and was taken to one of the cruisers, someone who knows the family I suppose.

I really wonder if more needs to be done to council and support the estranged husband/boyfriend when these messy splits occur. I'm not trying to justify this man's actions. Nothing can do that. But I can very easily empathise with the frustration a husband/Father can go through when their ex uses the legal system as a hammer against them. Again I'm not trying to imply this victim was doing that. I don't know that. I do know that it does happen far too often though and I fear the knee jerk reaction to this tragedy will be to give the women a bigger hammer. Personally I would rather issue her a gun.

I don't think "normal guys" kill children when they don't get their way. I think we need to teach people how to handle their problems without resorting to violence.

Mr. Lall was an intern architect (a title given to those working toward their certification) at Cohos Evamy, a Calgary-based architecture design company, for the past five years, a managing partner at the firm confirmed yesterday.
I have an 8:30 meeting at Cohos today. It is going to be a very weird morning.

How come everyone thinks it was the man who shot and killed everyone? Maybe I am missing information but I heard on the radio it was the husband and wife/their children and another women. It could have easily been the other women or the wife.
Very very bizarre incident though, you don't see murders like this very often in Calgary.

I was thinking the same thing. Have they confirmed it was the husband?

A paramedic had the horrific task of confirming the unfathomable -- five individuals, identified by family and friends as Joshua Lall, his wife, Alison, and their daughters, Rochelle, 3, and Kristen, 5, as well as Amber Bowerman, a basement tenant -- were all dead.
The only person unharmed in what police Chief Rick Hanson called a "domestic homicide" in the home on Dalhart Hill N.W. was a one-year-old girl, who was taken from the home in good health.
While sources said it was a suspected murder-suicide at the grisly scene, Hanson would only say that has not been ruled out as a motive behind the killings, stressing they are not random and they are not looking for suspects.
"Preliminary indications are it's a domestic homicide," Hanson said.

Amid the carnage, however, the couple's one-year-old daughter was found unharmed.
Why the infant was spared injury -- and who among the dead may be responsible for the killing spree -- are two key questions that remain unanswered as homicide investigators try to piece together what unfolded inside the home in the 5500 block of Dalhart Hill N.W.
Four of the five dead are part of a young family.

Everyone who knew this family is shocked by what happened, but there were recent signs something may have been wrong.
According to the Calgary Sun, the parents of Joshua Lall got a frantic phonecall from their son a few days ago.
Apparently he stated something was wrong, but didn't get into specifics.
Joshua's father, Dominic, says he and his wife we're scheduled to arrive in Calgary on Wednesday night, but before catching that flight they got a call from police and watched the horrific drama at their son's home unfold on the news.
Lall's dad says they had no idea of any trouble in their son's life and thought everything was fine.
A neighbour, Mia Albino, tells the National Post, while being interviewed by police the officer told her, the five victims had all been stabbed.

If you check Google news, they are reporting this across the world, right from the UK all the way to China. A rather grim newspiece to wake up to, nonetheless, and some rather negative press for Calgary.
