Is it like XBOX live? Like do you have to pay monthly and if so where do you register?
Will it connect to our wireless internet like the wii does?
Is it relatively easy to set-up or is there anything else I need to get before I go home after work to get it going?

Oh wow, you aren't even aware of two of my favorite features! The playstation network (PSN) is completely free to play on, and the ps3 does have built-in wireless so it should quite easily connect to your network. PSN isn't as cool as live, but it's free, so that's gotta count for something. You won't need anything to get it going out of the box.
Signing up for the network is easy. I'm sure you'll figure it out on your own, but here's a handy guide if you want to follow along.

They go into crazy, unnecessary detail but it's all there!
Once you sign up for an account, you will be prompted to download the latest update. It will take a little while to download (maybe 20 minutes or so), so get your frustration out of the way now.
Once that's done and you're all set up with your online, go to the 'friends' category on the far right and hit the 'add friend' option. Just type in my gamertag (RedMile), let me know it's you in the message body and fire it off. I'll accept the invite tonight and then you'll be able to see when I'm on, what I'm playing and we can hook up for online killing.
When you throw GTA into your system it will load a few gigs to the hard drive (regrettably, this means you have another 7 minute delay). Don't worry though, it's all to help with load times.
