Can we get them to drop the Oilers down and out first?

I'm okay with the Rangers getting screwed over as well, but there's something bigger that probably needs addressing. With our own deals with Vegas, and now this one, it seems agents or players are leaking where they'll exclusively play. It tanks the value the team can acquire if this is known. To me the league should come down hard on it. Teams are getting screwed by the returns when the poker hand is shown.

They didn't need to leak. The agent was given permission to talk to all teams.
Anyways, unless the NHL gets access to all players or agents phones and emails, it will be impossible for the league to police this. Even then, there are ways to get around it.

Teams could just stop handing out NTC's or NMC's.
The Rangers got Panarin for nothing and do get something with him leaving. No need to feel sorry for them.

Drury completely took away whatever bargaining position he had by announcing that Panarin will not be re-signed. Conroy knew enough not to do that - it was always being leaked that both sides were 'talking' now and then, and perhaps it would be worth it to re-sign Andersson.
Drury is just an incompetent manager, and I hope that Conroy is able to make trades with him down the road.

When a GM does this https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...ghlight=borgen he really is an incompetent GM.

Here’s where it gets goofy. According to multiple sources, the Kings’ Panarin pursuit almost fell apart over the last couple of days. From the beginning, they were nervous about term on an extension for the 34-year-old winger. But the two sides were discussing something in the $45 million range. (My guess is five years at a $9 million AAV, but don’t know that for sure.)
On Tuesday, that fell apart. Los Angeles wasn’t willing to go there. Panarin’s agent, Paul Theofanous (who could not be reached for comment) contacted several teams to juice the bidding. Only he knows what he really told people, but word spread like wildfire that he’d indicated Panarin was going to Carolina and someone else was willing to pay $60 million (a four-year contract with a $15 million AAV).
All of this was denied by anyone we asked (for good reason, as it turned out) but it certainly created a couple hours of craziness. Everyone heard the same rumours, and no one could figure out what was happening.
One major suspect for the big bidder: Seattle, who beat the Kings Wednesday night and are third in the Pacific. Several sources indicated the Kraken offered a four-year extension “with an AAV higher than Leon Draisaitl’s.” The Edmonton cornerstone is at $14 million. That’s … just wow … but I’m not surprised they’d do it. It’s bold and it fits what they’re looking to do.
“We had discussions with Paul Theofanous…just like numerous other teams,” GM Jason Botterill said early Thursday morning. “We will continue to be aggressive at improving our team. But we won't comment on discussions with agents/players.”
Carolina lurked. So did Washington, and, I suspect, Utah. But Panarin, as evidenced Wednesday when he told the Rangers he would only go to LA, wanted the Kings. So they re-engaged and got to the two-year, $22-million zone they were comfortable with.
Panarin wanted LA so badly he may have left $30 million behind.

Seems weird to want to be in LA that much. New York is way better than LA.

In many ways, yes, but perhaps the last week or two of bitter cold winter made him long for some sunny skies and warmer temperatures. I've heard many a seasoned New Yorker complain about the weather lately.

I like this deal for multiple reasons.
-Makes LA better in the short term. Ideally they'll be more formidable roadblock for the Oilers/Knights
-Frees up the market for Calgary's trade block.
-Will hopefully dampen the amount of comments around Calgary's GMs getting owned by players/agents/other teams. Players with NMC / limited NTC have leverage in today's NHL. The returns for Andersson, Hanafin, etc.. are better than Panarins.

Can't remember Hanifin's status, but Andersson had a modified NTC with just six teams on it. If he had a full NTC, the return likely would have been as grim as it was for Panarin.
There are some reports that Conny is showing a little too much reverence for Kadri, who can be traded to 18 teams without his approval. There would be some frustrated posters here, and rightfully so, if it came out that Conroy did not extract the full value out of Kadri as a favour to him.
He is a very young GM but my opinion is Conroy needs to develop a ruthless streak to avoid being run over in future deals.

He easily left tens of millions on the table, and for what? Kings are not even in the top 10 best chances for a Cup.

And the reason why their teams have been 100+ point teams have been less about their young players and more about Kopitar and Doughty still leading the way.
The Athletic already had them moving from "win now" to "time to rebuild" in their contention cycle piece.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/659...tiers-2025-26/
Their contention window closed before it opened.
Panarin maybe props it slightly ajar for a few years, but does anyone see them as a real contender?
|
The key high draft picks they got when they were at the bottom were:
Turcotte - 24
Byfield - 23
Clarke - 22
Turcotte is looking like he will be depth at best, but it's still early to say Byfield and Clarke aren't impact players.
During that time, they have developed or brought in some very good young pieces in Kempe, Fiala, and Anderson. They also did this while keeping very good veteran players they have continued to be good into their late 30s.
Now they added one of the best wingers in the league for next to nothing. Are they a threat? Time will tell but adding a player like Panarin and keeping everyone else and you are a 100-point team that has made the playoffs 4 years in a row, and you also have growth potential from a few young players, time will tell if they are a contender, but I also bet they are not done.

Why not? Grew up in Russia. Played in St. Petersburg, Chicago, Columbus and New York. Has already made more than he could ever need in his lifetime. Maybe he just wants to be at the beach. Many people consider this in a work-change scenario and may actually want to make a change for that specific purpose. None of it necessarily reflects on their potential work performance.

It's individual preference. I've had the opportunity to live in multiple US cities.
New York is one city I would never live. I love to visit every year though.
On the other hand, LA..... I wish I could afford one of those $20 million homes overlooking the city.
