It's weird because that d-core isn't flashy - but also is first in 5v5 GA this year, 3rd in All Situation GA, and 5th in All Situation xGA.
So they've been solid defensively. Ceci, Dumouling, and Edmundson area also all those type of dmen that have bad advanced stats, aren't great regular season dmen, but tend to be more effective in the playoffs.
Add Kadri and Panarin to add more offensive pop and you might have a shot.
Interesting. You're right there are some decent defensive dmen there with some toughness for playoffs. Modern NHL I always look at puck moving dmen and aside from Clarke it's pretty shallow with Doughty's production going down but if they're keeping the puck out of their own net that's massive.
Minnesota and LA now seem like destinations for Kadri in my eyes.
Kings clearly in a win now, Minnesota went hard with Hughes.
I think Kadri ends up in Minny, LA, or Montreal.
Also, I think this Panarin trade was bad for both LA and New York, because NYR got suppressed value and LA is locked into being mid as hell. So win-win.
Not sure what posters you are talking about but my point has been that teams just entering their contention window are not going to want to trade big future pieces just yet.
LA is different though. They are on the verge of a failed re-build. They don't have much coming in the pipeline. The fact that Greentree, who is meh, is there best prospect is evidence of this.
Greentree doesn't change much about their future. If this re-build fails (as I think it is) they've got a long road ahead. This deal seems to be an effort to try and squeeze something out of this re-build for a couple years.
TLDR: I don't think LA is gutting future because they already don't have a positive one.
LA has made the playoffs 4 years in a row, average 103 points per year. If that is a failed rebuild, then most teams will fail at rebuilding.
They aren't the Avs and they aren't the Sharks, but I could see them adding this year and being a threat for the next 3 years.
They still have loads of cap next summer and I could see Doughty signing for much less. The have a + draft situation and just added their best player for next to nothing. It is a franchise altering move even if he is 34.

I expect he would have happily gone to TB or FLA instead, but they didn’t have the cap space to extend him.
When it comes to chances to win, players don’t really rank teams very granularly. There are a handful of contenders at the top, some crappy/rebuilding teams at the bottom, and then everyone else is roughly equivalent.
Oh, I agree that we generally overestimate players' ability to assess teams (and other players for that matter).

It is a lot less than what Conroy got for Rasmus but it is I guess not terrible. Probably ends up being a former late 1st and a 3rd at the end of the day.
