I think between Herdman, Henry, Harms, Myroniuk and Chanda we are in OK shape for U21 minutes. Holliday would also count, but there's no reason to believe he will play even one minute with Carducci around.

Definitely need more on defense. I'd even say with three roster spots left I'd use two on D. Probably use the other spot on a winger or forward. I don't trust Wright to contribute much so probably a striker.

This sums up my feelings. Maybe the 2nd D spot is a more versatile left footer who could also fill in on the wing.

I know they want a striker for Tobi to play off of and were disappointed Brian Wright chose Forge

Didn't realize Herdman was still U-21 eligible. With that being the case I think we'll be fine.

I make no guarantee on that one - I have him as a 2004 birthdate. Lowell Wright is a 2003 and counted towards the U21 minutes last year so I'm assuming Herdman counts this year.

Didn't Herdman declare for NZ and therefore wouldn't count? I don't even think he's a Canadian citizen. I could be way off though.

Field is back now too which is good for depth. Thought he performed very well at both LB and CB last year

Plus some contract info

Cavalry FC has exercised the 2025 contract options for: forward Ali Musse; midfielder Shamit Shome; defender Michael Harms; and goalkeeper Joseph Holliday.

The club has also signed six players from its 2024 roster to new agreements:

Defender Bradley Kamdem, on a contract guaranteed through 2027
Defender Callum Montgomery, on a contract guaranteed through 2026
Defender Tom Field, on a contract guaranteed through 2025 with an option for 2026
Midfielder Jesse Daley, on a contract guaranteed through 2025 with an option for 2026
Midfielder Niko Myroniuk, on a contract guaranteed through 2025 with options for 2026 and 2027

Love that Kamdem is signed for another 3 years. I'm a big fan of local players laying down roots with the club.

The CPL website includes him in last years totals so I assume that's correct: https://canpl.ca/u-21-minutes-played/

Anyone that has a Canadian passport counts.

That's what I'm saying. He's born in NZ, and his pops is English. Does he even have a Canadian passport?

Guess it doesn't matter since the league is counting his minutes.

Imagine being Willy Akio. Cavalry bring back almost the whole squad and they rip up his contract. Guess he can spend more time at the bar.

Article on Daan Klomp returning to Europe. He rejected a new contract offer from Cavalry. Says he's achieved everything he could in Canada (which is true with a Shield, a Cup, player of the year and multiple defender of the year awards). Was hoping to make the move to MLS but it never happened.

Said he was welcomed in Calgary and it felt like home.

Last night at the supporters meetup Tommy mentioned that they are bringing an attacking player to preseason that he compared to Warschewski in terms of profile. When I chatted with him he said "we're in the dating phase". I'm not going to spoil who they are but if they do end up signing it will be a name familiar to those in Calgary soccer. And IMO would be a great add. They are on the hunt for a CB replacement for Klomp as well.
Okay, this signing is official. It's Caniggia Elva.

Klomp is on trial and apparently about to sign with with Adelaide United in the A-League. That would be a good move for him.

Interesting move for Klomp, and I hope he thrives there. It's a shame he wanted a new challenge, but totally understandable.

I see A-League as doing what the CPL should be doing with a little more ambition and less salary frugality ($2.25m AUD salary cap ($2m CAD approx.) plus "marquee player" that can make $300-600k).

A-League has a couple intriguing former big names (Juan Mata and Douglas Costa) and has had some former huge ones (Del Piero) that assuredly helps bring in casuals and football snobs. They also have a transparent collective bargaining agreement. CPL should be taking note.

A-League is a totally logical spot if the step to MLS is deemed too large for him at this point.

Sure, but A League has been around for 20 years and has average match attendance of over 13k.
When the CPL can get that level of attendance and stability from all its clubs, then some of those things make sense to bring in.

Fun side story - In 2013, I saw a Melbourne Victory vs. Sydney FC game, was sold out... I contacted the Victory, told them I was a Canadian backpacker in the area at the time and needed to somehow see this game since I was a huge Del Piero fan; they contacted me a couple days later and invited us to sit in their premium seats for free, welcome to Australia and to enjoy the game on them. Got to see Del Piero at that time in all of his (cherry picking) glory haha. Seeing Del Piero at least once before he retired? Bucket list item checked off.

The Victory were so damn friendly and accommodating, just all-around class that week, A+ organization.

Not quite... average is about 9k. Still double CPL, but the majority of teams running closer to Forge/Cavalry/AO/HFX levels of attendance (or less) with a few bigger ones. Essentially, its CPL if you added in Whitecaps and CF Montreal.

https://www.transfermarkt.us/a-leagu...ettbewerb/AUS1

Also, A-League brought in marquee players early (Del Piero signed with Sydney in 2012, or roughly year 6 of Sydney's existence), and I would contend with the league entering year 7, playing the largest teams in North America in tournaments, claiming all 8 teams are "financially healthy" publicly to potential cities, and hoarding a suspicious amount of CSB money (that certainly isn't showing in Valour's public financial statements)... its time to get a lot more serious than a $1m salary cap roughly adjusted for inflation.
