I think they should have waited TBH.

Wait until February, that trade demand ask has subsided, and I think you get a 2nd for him.

Doing a division rival a favour for a 3rd and a 5th makes no sense.

Considering Zadorov is a cancer on the locker room and barely a third line defenseman and the Flames lost all the leverage when his agent pulled that stunt, this is a good return.

Worth mentioning, we are almost $1 million under the cap now, which could help facilitate other deals. The flexibility is worth something.

Travis Dermott for 3rd
Hamonic for 3rd

Personally feel like Zadorov should have returned at least a 2nd, he's better than the guys that returned a 3rd here.

No idea why you're making this trade now and not just waiting...unless you have another deal where you're taking on cap for some reason.
To much winning.

Maybe I’m weird, but I’m fine with this trade. I’ll take the extra draft capital and opening up more cap space

I think the writing was on the wall when Zadorov's agent came out publicly and demanded a trade. I'm guessing there's still a continued rift in the dressing room (despite Back's attempts), and forced Conroy's hand earlier than he would have liked.

Pretty weak... not much better than letting him go for nothing, will be two longshot prospects unlikely to play nhl games and you've beefed up a division rival to do it to boot. Worst part is the 3rd is in 2026 three drafts out. Hard to believe this was the best offer but must have been I guess.

He tanked his own trade value, he was playing like a disinterested turd, and was probably a negative in the room, it felt like that.

It'd be nice to get more, but it was more important to get him out.

I used to like the guy, but lost a lot of respect due to his effort after the public trade request.

So in summary, screw that guy, good riddance.

Honestly doing this now for a 3rd and a 5th screams that they wanted the cap space now for some reason...

Ya not too impressed by the return but I also think Vancouver will end up being disappointed by what they paid. The most charitable interpretation of this is that it now guarantees the team wants to retain 50% on Tanev/Lindholm/Hanifin when they are traded which are the three most important assets to maximize value on.

Should have got a conditional pick based on playoff success or something, leave at least a faint hope of upside.

If we can set up a scenario to retain on Tanev IMO if I want a cup and need a depth d I will take Tanev over Zadorov by a long shot.

See McDavid and Leon stats when Tanev is out. He's still a top end shut down guy and PK dman.

Could be true, but then i would just keep him. Locker room could be strained, but on the flipside....Z needs a contract next year. He is going to want to perform.

Hell if he is being a total bitch in the dressing room? Scratch him a couple times. Play him 5 mins for the next couple games. Then when he heels, you say play like your career depends on it.

Well at least the 3rd rounder in 2026 will be like a late 2nd rounder....

The one thing, looking at Capfriendly, is that as of right now this opens up 5M for the deadline. That probably increases if they can accrue more space from there. It definitely opens up options taking salary back. If Salary is also going out, it means we can take a whole lot more.

I may not like it at first glance, I will hold out judgement until I see how things play out. If they are able to get a few more picks by being a third team, then I attribute that to this move and get a better big picture of the move.

This is the exact trade where Treliving would get blasted for "giving up valuable picks"

Except this time, we're getting the valuable picks.

I guess Conroy could have banged his fists on the table and demanded two second rounders or whatever and just walked Zadorov to UFA instead when no one was interested lol
