If the ink on Hanifin's contract isnt dry by the TDL then ship him.

This is getting beyond ridiculous.

I think it just seems ridiculous because we're dealing with an above-average number of players hitting UFA.

Otherwise, there are a lot of upcoming higher-profile UFAs that haven't signed yet.

Haha I knew that that story was spun out of context.

Seemed out of left field for Hanifin.

No. He pretty clearly indicated that he wasnt interested in staying and now he's doing a spin-o-rama.

Probably whatever money he or his agent thought was out there for him at his preferred destinations doesnt exist and now he's hoping someone throws him a life preserver.

I'm not interested in being the team of 'last resort.' You dont want to be here? Theres the door.

Not getting the money you want in the place you want? Tough. Life sucks, then you die.

House hold name: doesn’t matter
People from other cities knowing him: doesn’t matter
Attracting other players: not a thing

I think you're probably reading far more into it than what is actually there.

Nobody had a good time last season, but time heals a lot of wounds. I also believe reports were that he was happy to play out the season as a Flame, so I don't know what about that has actually changed. It's not like he's begging them to sign him now, he's maintained basically the same stance with the only difference being it's a (very) slightly softer one now.

If guys don't want to be here, they aren't going to sign here. That's how it works.

Do we actually know who the captain is yet? What's the benefit to delaying the announcement like some big secret? Maybe he needs some more vacation time first.

No we don't. I also don't think the team has decided on a captain just yet. At some point Conroy said that management and coaching staff are going to meet to make the decision, so it's not just Huska or Conroy making the decision.

From everything the players said it should be Backlund, but his age and contract situation raise some question marks. Is it a good look for an organization to potentially trade the newly appointed captain at the deadline?

Yes, trading our captain at the deadline makes sense as it should net us an extra prospect based on the captain status alone.

Makes sense, thanks

Plus it sets us up for another 4 years without a captain. Bonus!

I'm OK with selecting a new captain every trade deadline that the team is out of a playoff spot. Discard the old and in with the new!

There was a full news article somewhere awhile back about Andersson and food and dietary changes. I would go read it but it will make me hungry.

Let Backlund hand it to Andersson when he departs mid season or at seasons end.

If Backlund is in the room and Andersson is named Captain I just dont see the rest of the team buying in 100% so why set the room up for that situation.

Give it to Backlund

The captaincy is not a participation trophy, and it’s not a bargaining chip.

Backs knows it’s important to the team the captain be here long term - if he wanted the C more than anything, he’d have signed already, at a discount.

It’s fine that he hasn’t, and it’s fine if that’s not what he wants. It would be unreasonable to expect either.

It just means he won’t be captain.

Rasmus can and should be, and i would hazard a guess he’s told Conroy he wants to be here long term.

In many ways, it’s an inspired selection.

-Home grown player
-Didn’t make the jump right away - took time. Was developed by Huska, and can cite himself as reason why guys should believe in what Huska asks of them.
-gets better year after year - doesn’t rest on his laurels.
-talks ####
-good with the media
-not American
-uses slap shots

Id be okay with any of Weegar, Huberdeau, and Andersson as captain. If Lindholm re-signs before the season starts I'd add him to the list but not sure he'd even want the C.

If you have a captain and then 4 alternates that rotate home and road I'd probably go:

Andersson, Weegar, Huberdeau, Lindholm(if he re-signs), Kadri as the 5 guys.

As great of leaders guys like Backlund and Tanev might be, they likely aren't here long term. Those 5 guys likely make up the core of this team for at least the next 4 seasons (if Lindholm were to re-sign).

I haven't been following discussions in threads re: Hannifin so I don't know if this has been brought up yet regarding his statement that he'd be open to re-signing here but one reason he might say that is he doesn't want to be treated as the #1 whipping boy now that it looks like he may still play some games in a Flames uniform.
