Yeah, the human loss is tragic, the historic loss is significant as well.

Damn it was a cool place, not wealthy boobs and awful massive developments.
The rebuild will be awful, walls of condos and as much money as POS developers can make.
And there will be this lame memorial spot for the victims.

My face is a bum!

They should take all the burnt out cars, find somewhere accessible in the ocean, and dump them in to make a memorial reef that people can visit.

Not in Maui. It's quite a bit more likely they put in 0 tourist infrastructure and declare Lahaina a town for Hawaiians only than it is they would allow a bunch of high end tourist development.

I saw 2 separate news stories today about local residents complaining that there are still tourists hanging around trying to enjoy their holidays like nothing happened. One person even said that they are swimming at the beach while other people are trying to retrieve bodies from the water.

Based on reports from locals desperately searching for their loved ones, and 3% of the search of structures completed - the current toll seem grossly understated. Absolutely heart wrenching stories from locals, and of the recovery teams. Many remains are charred and will require DNA forensics.
Joint Base Pearl Harbor / Hickam does have the finest forensic anthropology lab in the US military, dedicated to ID'ing remains of fallen soldiers from past wars. I'm sure they will draw into this effort, and can only hope they provide some closure to those in loss.

Those tourists aren't on the Maui County council that will be voting on the permits for redevelopment.

The devastating and deadly wildfires in Maui are expected to have an 'astronomical' economic on the island and cause a severe local recession, Moody's Analytics reported Monday.
The economic toll could run between $3 billion and $7.5 billion, according to initial estimates released Monday..
"The price tag is astronomical in the context of Maui's size, as annual output is about $10 billion," Adam Kamins and Katie Nied, Moody's Analytics economists, wrote in the research report.
