Someone posted this agent has signed 2 year deals for most his clients hoping for that cap bump.
We also created 1.4 in cap space. SO we have 2.4 in cap space now. Hanifin 4.95 off the books and depending on the return should help round out the line up.
Toffoli is so overrated by some on CP. His performance last year was at the expense of Hubderdeau, Kadri, Lindholm. Why some dont understand that is mind boggling.
This is exactly it. Sutter loved Toffoli and would give Toffoli a lot of opportunities he otherwise wouldn't have had. Toffoli had 73 points last year, but has only broken 50 points one other time, and that was 9 years ago.
Other teams know this, which was why the trade value for Toffoli wasn't sky high.
The Flames overpaid for Toffoli when they acquired him, as he was a potential 30 goal scorer, signed to a manageable contract of perfect length.
That being said, Toffoli is not a great skater to begin with. If he loses a step, he's going to be useless. At 31, that is likely to happen anytime in the next 3 years. The guy has a quickly approaching expiry date.
Pretty uncontroversial contract, I have no issues with it. If this kid can come in and be a 15-20 goal guy, and get 40-50 pts its not bad at all. Hoping he grasps the opportunity in Calgary.

I'm quietly optimistic about a good form season and him being both a reliable on-ice hand and a great off-ice teammate. I think that's what this can really start rebuilding the core with.
Why only 2 years? Flames could easily extend or trade him down the road to add to the trade tree.
It's how contracts work....
You either sign him to a 3ish million bridge deal, or you throw a crapload more money at him to lock him up long term. For example, he'd probably want $5+ million to sign for 5 years or more, as you, at that point, are signing him through his prime production years. That would run a massive risk, as Sharangovich may end up being a 3rd liner.
Unless Sharangovich, himself, believes that he will never progress beyond what he is and is willing to take a low contract just for the certainty, you are not signing him to a long-term contract that you want to sign him to.

He's already had a season with 24 goals, and his rookie season was a 25 goal pace. The Flames are likely hoping last year was a sophomore slump, and he'll continue to progress.

I was commenting on the 1 year of Toffoli for 2 years of Sharangovich. It may only be 2 years now, but could be more in the future. Toffoli was 1 year no matter what. I think it is good asset management.
The Following User Says Thank You to Robbob For This Useful Post:
You can't just assume Sharangovich is going to leave after two seasons, and even if he did, you would then have to also assume he wouldn't be moved for additional assets.
The only thing that we can say with certainty was that Tyler Toffoli requested a trade and didn't want to be a Calgary Flame any longer.
According to Steinberg Toffoli wanted to be a Flame for 6 more years. Good on Conroy for not committing 6 years to a guy who will be 32 when the season starts.
The hope is that Sharangovich has similar production to Toffoli’s career average and when his current deal is up, committing to a longer term contract with a 27 year old Sharangovich is a better plan.

I can see the Flames putting him on a line with Huberdeau and Dube.
Same sort of setup that Huberdeau had in Florida.
Two players with some speed to open space and go to the net.
Sharangovich has the ability to score goals.

I'm personally glad they didn't sign him to a long contract befer he even played a game a la Huberdeau
Exactly, stop putting money in players pockets that havent even spent a second in the locker room. How do you think Backlund, Toff, and Lindy felt when two big unknowns are all of a sudden taking all the money off the table while not proving a damn thing in the flaming C.
I think that was the most toxic part of the dressing room, 'Nothing earned' was prevalent this past year.
let Sharang prove himself, and if he comes through reward him with term then.
