3.1M AAV for a 0.5 PPG player is basically market value.

No but buying one or two years would have made the optics better. If he's good, he'll be expensive and the world will be his oyster. If he's bad, then I guess this was smart, but that's not reassuring.

Wait what? This guy was a healthy scratch for the Devils in the playoffs and he gets 3.1 million for two years I don't understand this at all.

One year to see how he fits and then one year to negotiate a contract. I would have preferred one year but not the end of the world.

If 2 years to UFA is 3.1, his agent would have been asking 4 at least for 4 years. Too much for a new guy with his track record.

Seems like a reasonable contract.

Money is fine, hopefully he's willing to discuss an extension after this year if he seems worth it.

I would imagine they'll look to lock him down long-term next summer if he has a good year.

With the new 8.5m contracts being the old 6m/yr, 3.1 is the new 2.3m
Inflation hitting everywhere!

Was thinking something like 2-2.5M x 3, but we can't always get what we want.

Flames must really see something special in this fellow and believe he can bounce back better than ever. I'm all for it.

You can't be going to an arbitration case with a freshly acquired player.. This is a good showing of faith by both parties.

Fine contract. Takes up both his RFA years, but avoids arbitration

People sure are quick to criticize every move this team makes.
I'm not in the room negotiating a trade, contract with a new player, evaluating how they fit in the team.
We need to wait and see how this plays out before being critical.
Quick jumps to say negative things about a player most could not name before yesterday just by looking at their stats from last year is exhausting.
