I think the team has the pieces. If every player was playing to their recent (last few seasons) averages, especially Huberdeau and Markstrom, we would be in a playoff spot. Although it could be aging curves catching up.
This would mean that the issue lies in chemistry, the systems, players not buying in or the players not performing to their potential for who knows what reason.
edit: system seemed to work fine last year so it is hard to say its the issue

it's pretty easy to understand. When the Flames are winning, Darryl's farmhand demeanor is funny and tolerable. Just the grumpy old grandpa at the thanksgiving dinner table.
When they are losing, it wears thin. You can see it from the local media. Your team can't play like this and then act unaccountable after the game.

This is probably all we can expect. Team spins wheels all season finishes middle of the pack. Treliving leaves and new GM is brought in and Sutter retires/resigns/is fired.
Youd hope with the huge equity bump in value to the team that ownership would act quicker. But we know what to expect with this franchise by now.

If you're gonna fire the coaching staff get rid of LaBarbara and Sigalet before they ruin Wolf too

We can get to the bottom six if we trade some of the contracts that expire soon.
Lindholm would garner a lot.
Hanifin would command a lot.
Mangiapane may get a decent haul.
Tanev would fetch a decent return.
Anderson would net a sizeable return.
Markstrom would have value to a a club with contending aspirations.
Ship those guys out and this team plummets precipitously.
Plug in zary, Pelletier, Phillips, kuznetsov, solovyov , Gilbert and wolf.
Our cap is fixed and we stock up on assets for the upcoming drafts. This draft will be a good time to do so.
Like resign lindholm at 29 when he has shown he is not a play driver.
Resign hanifin when he is a low iq guy who will probably bolt to the states first chance he gets?
Anderson would hurt but someone will pay big for his prime. Why waste his prime here when we have no chance at competing?
Markstrom is a season removed from a vezina nomination. At 6 million someone will bite. Washington could, Toronto could, at Louis could , Vegas could , etc.
It would be tough to see Tanev shipped but he’s been such a warrior that he deserves a shot at a cup while he’s on his last good legs. His pedigree of defenders are always sought after.
It’s tough to watch this team but hey. Remember we’re flames fans. We’re used to mediocrity.
We’re used to ownership counting on us always being there because god forbid the threaten to move the mid to small market franchise we are.
If they move I don’t think I’d care. Gary has consistently favoured American teams. He wants the franchises to be valuable because he cares about the owners. He doesn’t care about fans , who ultimately pay for the product.
I appreciate the skill of todays game but the amount of suspicious narrative reeking game management from the officials has left a bad taste in my mouth.
Say what u will about the oil but they do know how to lose. We can’t even lose properly. Bennet is our highest pick ever.
This team will be vying for the final playoff spot with a late surge. We will all think this team finally is gonna show up for the competition but who are they gonna beat in a seven game series? Dallas? Colorado? Edmonton? Nahsville? Vegas? Minny? Winny?
We sure will beat the lottery odds and not even sniff a top selection.
I don’t want to be right. Someone bet me something that will alter the quantum mechanics of the universe to push these bums into the second round like last year.

Yeah for sure. It's hard to see that being the issue since the drop-off is so massive for so many key players.
But what is it then?
System worked fine last season.
Are the players not buying into the system? Is it chemistry? How do you even fix that?

What really stings I think for most fans (like myself) is that we really didn’t know much about Huberdeau and Weegar. Sure we knew he was a 100 point player and heard great things about him from guys like Cali and others who watched FLA over the years.
Then all of a sudden we back up the truck and award the guy the largest contract in team history before he plays one game in Flames silks.
So we season ticket and other stakeholders who have shelled out tens of thousands of dollars over the years have placed a huge amount of trust in management regarding unknown assets. At least if we had re-signed Johnny to a huge contract we knew what we were getting. He was a home grown known quantity.
So fast forward to today and it’s clear the trade was bust and before the EIGHT year contract even kicks in we are hearing words like albatross and worst in team history.
This is just a disaster at every level.
Fans are shell shocked.

No one on the roster is playing with a ton of confidence but if I was coach and feeding icetime to players to turn the tide I’d prioritize Vladar, Dube, Andersson, Zadorov, and Mangiapane.

I do think the lack of home grown talent on this team is part of why I hate it. Feels like a team of ####ty mercenaries. I didn't see them come through juniors as Flames prospects. I never got excited for them as younger players.
Then they come here and get the richest contracts in franchise history.
The team just feels faceless and they certainly play like it.

Oh well maybe they’ll win the next time I attend a game in 2035.

It’s so unfortunate that those guys left, but they HAD to deal with it correctly and look to draft the next Johnny or Chucky. Not look to guys on retirement contracts

If nothing else, hopefully tonight's game makes it clear who should and should not be playing more.
To many of us, it's already clear. But this game just make it that much clearer.

Maybe it’s the booze but now I’m really getting worked up. I feel Tre and management have wrecked the team we all love for years.

I’m not mad about any of this failure. Team just is what it is.
They’re a bubble team. They don’t have the elite game breaking skill needed to win anything meaningful in this league.
We can all rage about this or that, but a duck is a #%^*ing duck. A lemon is a gawt dang lemon.
This team is a lemon. They may put together a stretch, they may make the playoffs…but there’s nothing “Championship quality” about this team.

Ya I was lamenting this earlier. Gaudreau, Bennett, Monahan, Tkachuk, Brodie, Gio. All Flames drafted and developed players, performing fairly well for their new teams. Just the product of Treliving having zero internal succession planning.
