This is just not true

14/15 key players were on their ELC and had expectations they were going to be bad. Everyone talked about the luck that team had and it was undeniable they were playing an unsustainable style.

19/20 they were coming off a 50 win 107pt season where they got smacked by a team that was the second wildcard but also was an emerging powerhouse in the league which they have been during the last 2 regular seasons.

In 19/20 they were years into big money extensions with players who were on their ELC during 14/15. Gaudreau was 4th in Hart voting the previous season, Monahan had ppg, and Lindholm blew up in his first year.

Are you saying that after the 18/19 season or when they were a top team record wise after moving on from Peters in 19/20 they should have considered themselves a bubble team? Remember the Canucks were in a tailspin before the lockdown and the Flames were one of the better teams in the league.

Pitlick has taken a grand total of 119 faceoff's in his 7 years in the NHL. He is not a center.

Pitlick for Lucic. One for one. I like Looch but if you get out of that contract…

That was in the off season and a hockey trade. Big difference between that and selling off a UFA at the deadline for picks.

There is no defending this move

Hathaway doesn’t play center and signed a 4 year deal. Are we really going to criticize Treliving for not going 4-5 years with a 4th line winger?

Hathaway and Pitlick also aren’t that similar. One is a shutdown defensive minded center and one is a forechecking wrecking ball.

“There is no defending this move”

Do we need to be so dramatic?

With how that season played out leading up to the 19/20 deadline, and where they were in the standings - yes. You can't ignore the current situation because they were extremely good for 70% of the previous season.

The Flames were a salary cap team in 14/15, just like they were in 19/20.

Pitlick doesn’t play center either

Also Hathaway is more physical and is an elite penalty killer while Pitlick is one of the worst on the PK in the league

But yes letting Hathaway walk was a major mistake. He’s easily worth his current contract and more. Was one of the hardest working Flames I’ve ever seen
