There is no currently comparable situation to the Neal/Lucic trade that could prompt the Flames to acquire Kaveman Kassian. This is something that should raise no concern at all.

Hopefully the Flames don't have any bad contracts to unload in the next four years

Moving James Neal was not just about unloading a bad contract. Its was unloading one of the worst contracts in the League, and attempting to remedy an absolutely toxic situation. It was a perfect storm of suck that was virtually unprecedented.

I was just joking... however if I told you the Flames were gonna take on the Lucic contract a year ago I would have been laughed off the forum.

When compared to the contract the Flames gave Troy Brouwer this one actually isn't too bad.
I still think the last year he'll either be bought out or toiling in the AHL. But it's not that much money for a guy with his size and for a player his size he is reasonably fleet of foot. Term of the deal is where the risk is.

You know who else was a complete non-factor - James Neal. Despite being on the ice with McDavid a hell of a lot.

That 2 on 1 as a pleasure to watch.
Then, a little later in the 1st, the Oilers come up the ice on a 3 on 2, led by McDavid. Then Quinn mentions that the wingers were Kassian and Neal. Now, I already knew that these were his line-mates of course, but it hit me on a conscious level at that moment and I just started laughing.
The Edmonton Oilers had Connor McFrickingDavid dropped into their laps, and 4 years into his tenure, he is on a line with Kassian and Neal.
The incompetency of that is breath-taking. And hilarious!

I remember that play, I also laughed. I thought about what McDavid must have been thinking as he skated up ice.

I liked McDavid skating along and looking back like he did against Toronto and realizing there was no way those idiots are going to catch up. Only difference was the Flames defence ignored the other 2 and played McDavid like you should.

I get that Lucic got here in a bad contract swap. But. He's looked really, really slow the last couple of games. Clearly a step and then some behind, not able to even defend effectively.
Buddy Robinson has had twice as much positive impact. I'm afraid we might be seeing the end of Lucic's NHL usefulness right now, this year. Which makes the next four years ... scary.

I'm thinking this is a reasonable move, as they have serious trouble signing free agents or those with no-moves, so might as well bribe players to stay.
NHL Players also hate the Oilers.

Yeah, but that's part of the problem.
They promoted a guy to play with McAvi, and low and behold he puts up career numbers. So now they say "Hey we gotta pay to keep this guy".
Well, no you don't. Find some other schlub who is willing to go anywhere and put him on that line for cheap, he'll get his 20 goals, and you can send him packing next year and save $2.0 MM.
Look at Chaisson. Guy puts up career numbers after a PTO, so they give him $2.1 MM for the next 2 years, moved him off McAvi's line, and he's on pace for about what he's done his whole career, when he was making half as much money.
So next year, if they Keep Kassian on McAvi's line, cool, he'll get 20 goals, but they are probably spending $2.0 MM more than they needed to to get that from anyone on that line.
If they take him off that line, now they're paying $3.2 MM for a 4th liner.
I mean, I'm pretty happy they did it, but it's because it is definitely NOT a reasonable move.

It's a lose-lose.
If Kassian remains on McDavid's line, they have a 4th liner there, scoring 20 goals, when they should have a top liner scoring 35-40 goals.
Conversely, if they find someone else to play with McDavid, Kassian goes back to the fourth line (this is just a matter of time), and is seriously overpaid at $3.2M.
Lowe and behold, Flame fans win either way.
