If the Flames had signed Reeves he would be dressed for all the games outside of injury and suspension.

I can live with this. He looked pretty good in the preseason, so hopefully that carries over and he can play the game when it matters.

Prout didn't look out of place during the pre-season. Not a game changer or anything, but if he can come in and play simple hockey while limiting mistakes then that's fine. He was bound to play eventually so it's not a bad thing to get him a game early.

Uh, the puck goes right by both of them just as he hits him. WTF are you watching?

Gudbranson is trying to control neutral ice and prevent speed from Dube. Stepping up when the puck is sent his way is a perfectly normal response. Dube isn't looking and that's why he gets hit so hard. Gudbranson doesn't target his head in any way, but makes contact all the same. Still, Dube is vulnerable and Gudbranson knows he should probably let up in that situation, but it's a split second decision.

This whole thing really needs to die a quick death. I know everyone is emotional about players getting hurt and dropping the opener to a rival, but Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ, this is getting ridiculous.

Unfortunate, but that's how it goes sometimes in hockey. Get over it. Win the next game. Teach Dube how to not be so vulnerable in open ice and to protect himself some more. Hit their players cleanly and hard the next game.

If this was so dirty, wouldn't the league be calling Gudbranson? That's not happening, so I think we can all assume that this was an accidental play rather than a malicious one.

The last two days around here have been just exhausting. Is this forum going to be like this the whole friggin' year? I stayed away last year because of the ridiculous conversations, and it looks like I might be doing the same thing this year.

It was a dirty predatory hit. The league has proven time and time again they don’t care about player safety. That’s why he didn’t get a call. Just because they got one right doesn’t mean they aren’t still a joke.

That hit should have been 5 and a game. Maybe more.

And it was clean hit. I mean, other than it was early, Dube never touched the puck, it was blind side, and he hit his head. But other than that, totally clean.

Wasn’t the greatest pass from Hanifin... 10 years ago we would have been angry for him delivering that suicide pass. I didn’t think it was that bad of a hit, it was definitely early and worthy of a penalty though. But not predatory. I even think he got him mostly in the chest.

He misjudged it, we’ve seen this lots before. He took a penalty. Had to fight. It’s done with.

You know thats not how the D.O.P.S works. We see them miss stuff all the time. 2 non star players and no injury. Still a very reckless hit.

I had not up until today, but I am starting to come around. Hopefully Prout is better than I anticipate.

His underlying numbers in his stunts in Columbus and New Jersey weren’t that bad.

As fill in for a a sheltered 3rd pairing role he should be fine, id like to see Andersson there long term though.

I don't see how any retribution is needed. Certainly not a situation where the team needs to take a number for next game.

Gudbranson already answered the bell and got gifted an opportunity to take out one of our key defensemen while doing it. The hit itself was interference, which got called. The Flames need to remember the score of the first game and focus on rectifiying that.

Prout kinda handles the puck like a hand grenade, but he will staple people against the boards and in front of the net. (And of course drop the gloves if necessary)

Kind of like Engelland when he first donned the Flaming C.

But I think you really have to watch it live and in the stadium to appreciate that kind of a role. Whenever Engelland pasted someone against the glass it was thunderous, sounded so much louder than on the broadcast. Same with Stone. The conviction that you saw those two crosscheck and slam people into the boards gave you the appreciation that anyone wanting to stand in front of the net would feel it the next day. And while those have their downfalls as players, you forget all about 'fancy stats' for a few seconds whenever you hear the crunch against the boards.

I can already see part of tomorrow's result:

- Prout goes and punches Gudbranson in the face
- Prout gets an instigator
- Flames give up a goal on the PK
- CP members blame the PK unit for not backing up Prout

Broken jaw doesn’t always mean someone is out long term, wasn’t it bouma that broke his jaw as well a few years back? If I remember correctly he was back with the full face guard pretty quick.

I think the fact Gudbranson went over to apologize to Dube indicates it was non intentional.

If Dube touched the puck he would have crushed him in all likelihood but yea I do think he didn't mean to hit him without touching the puck.

The overreaction is because it was Dube's first NHL game and at first glance it looked malicious and pissed everyone off.

I agree we need to move on however..

It's unfortunate about Hamonic, he just has no luck since coming over. I still like him and hope for a speedy recovery as I feel he is an important piece to our backend.

I am less concerned about the actual time off the ice, and more concerned about the effect the recovery protocol and a full face guard will have on Hamonic for the first few months of the season. Frolik lost most of his teeth in the last week of December, and he did not look the same for the rest of the season.

Although we're all focused on the defensive pairings as a result of the injury, I wouldn't mind seeing this up front at some point:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Czarnik
Bennett-Jankowski-Neal
Dube-Ryan-Frolik
