Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic

Why are the Islanders trading Hamonic? Young and cheap, plus they are trying to entice JT they want to win

My guess was Fox mostly because of his New York roots.

It's funny how one day Hamonic is a top pairing 26 year old defenceman for cheap. The next, he's barely a number 4. He had an off year last year, but I think he's definitely a top 4 guy. The Flames will have a top 4 that only needs the third pair to cover 11 minutes a night now.
I'd be okay trading any prospect in our system to bring in this type of certainty. The Flames have an okay stable of defence prospects, but it's not like these guys are all sure fire top pairing guys....and I think a lot of people view them like that. It's like when they had Sven Baertschi...there was a serious infactuation with a skilled European prospect..I even remember a Winnipeg reporter once lamenting the Jets taking Schiefle over him.....the Flames never captured his full value. One year after his draft he was highly regarded. Today, he's a middling top 6 winger at best.

I generally feel the same way, but the acquisition of a top six RW would seal it for me.

Having a high level top 4 allows you to go younger on the third pair too
You can shelter their minutes a bit
It's a huge strength that so few teams have

Brouwer-esque this year but usually very good. Hopefully it was an off season.

Must involve a pick or two from this years' draft which is always overvalued.

Well aren't you still in a rebuild if you're trending up but have yet to have major playoff success. I think so.

I would also add that getting back to Western Canada will be a big positive in Hamonic's personal life and that can't help but translate into better performance on the ice too! He could be at his very best in the next 3 years.

He doesn't want out. He wants to be closer to home. Big difference.
