I thought they wanted to announce both contracts together? Monahan for 6.3 is a steal.

In my eyes, the deals rank as:
1. Scheifele - getting that 8th year is important, but clearly adds cost. Scheifele's hit on a 6 year deal would be below Barkov's AAV.
2. Monhan/Mackinnon - Monahan will likely come in at 6.5 or 6.4, but given that Mackinnon's stat-line was built while playing significant time on the wing, I think Monahan is the stronger centre going forward, and earned the slightly higher hit.
3. Barkov - only buying 2 years of UFA is a mistake, but it did help save 300-400k per year on the AAV. It helps Florida in the short term, but will be painful long term.

Great deal for the Flames. Very happy with this.

The way I always saw it that is that they should be getting much the same contracts. Monahan has lesser stats but he plays the more important position so it evens out. Also saying Gaudreau's size doesn't matter, misses the point that we want (need) a physical winger for him to play with. If he was bigger we could play him with anyone. I'd expect no more then $6.7M per for Johnny with the same term.

So are we safe to assume for first 4 years, he has a full NTC/NMC?

no, those were RFA years he isn't eligible for a NTC or NMC in those years.
To put it simply, a player is only eligible for a NTC or NMC in years he would have been UFA.

The Gaudreau contract is probably not that far behind. Trevling probably wanted to throw the masses a bone considering he had two weeks left in August. CP was getting restless.

In the end, I expect that he will sign a long term deal in the next two weeks.

I'm not making a big deal about this. It's just a feeling I have and nothing more. I hope I'm wrong of course but some Americans prefer to live in the US. I still believe he will sign but I feel he will be looking for around five years to keep his options open.

He is RFA for the first 4 years, THe next 3 years are UFA years and the only years he is eligible for NTC of any sort.

Don't forget that Barkov's contract is in Florida where they pay no state tax... his take home pay exceeds Scheifele's after you factor in differential tax rates.

Do we have any info on how much (if any) of Monahan's deal is structured in as signing bonuses?
