I actually catch myself experiencing twinges of disappointment on those few times in a game where he will miss-fire on one of those outrageous passes or zone entries. It's become so commonplace that my reactions have become ridiculous.

Nakladal isn't as reliable defensively as Russell I would say, but better offensively. He's showing promise though for sure. His shot is a weapon and he has nice mobility.

Wotherspoon looks like a #5 guy right now IMO. He looks like he could be a better partner for Hamilton long term than Russell would be if he continues to play well.

Both are helping to make Wideman look very expendable. Wouldn't mind Russell back at a decent price but if he isn't, these guys may be the guys replacing his minutes.

This is what a second or third year rebuild team should look like.

Push back, lots of give and stood up to a clearly better veteran team with outstanding goaltending!

The fact that they can go toe to toe with Doughty, Kopi, Quick and still come out with this great a result is fantastic.

Not a bad game, Ortio played well, Monahan scored, team did reasonably well. The most frustrating part of everything is this thread title, I mean how can this guy still be around?

Overall it wasn't a bad game. Hopefully Ortio earned himself another start. But just goes to show the gap between a legit cup contender like the Kings, and a rebuilding squad like ours. The Flames always seem to play the Kings hard, so I'm glad they didn't fold. However if Hiller was in net, it's probably a 5-1 game and we'd see the team sputter like we normally do.

Meh, it's one off year. Hopefully we can draft top 3 and it will totally be worth it. If we don't get one of the fins or Matthews then I'll be a bit bummed but bad seasons happen, even to good teams (LA 2015).

I'll worry if we don't see improvement next year.

His creativity is off the charts. Can't wait to see him continue to get better as the lineup around him gets better.

Sixth overall in NHL scoring with next to no help this season. When the rest of our talent matures and he gets a top line RW... watch out.
Thanks for this and I couldn't agree more. I was only able to tune in for the third period last night and he made several incredible plays. Him sneaking past the LA defender against the boards then driving to the net was a thing of beauty and the Flames deserved a PP there. Once again teams taking liberties on Gaudreau and getting away with it which bothers me.

The worst part is, I think he has a incredible amount of potential if he could get stronger. until then, I don't see how he still cracks the lineup night in and out.

What was Bob thinking scratching ferland for Stajan against the Kings? Ferland set the tempo early and is needed against a team like that.
The goal of the extra attacker is to score goals.

Colborne has literally twice as many points as Ferland.

In a situation where scoring is the necessity, Colborne has shown he's twice as effective as Ferland.

I hope you realize Colborne has had tons of PP time and scores half his points against Edmonton.

3 times as many goals as well. I think Ferland can be better than Colborne. But like it or not, at present Colborne is better at both ends of the ice and can take a faceoff as well.

If the object is to score goals, give me Colborne over Ferland every day of the week.

I don't know about the overall picture but I am worried about Monahan & Hamilton. Both have been something of a one-trick offense pony this year. The rest of their game ranges from meh to awful. If they are core pieces going forward, they need to get a lot better at everything that isn't offense

PS If you get all defensive and respond to this that they are 21 and 22 I will kick a puppy.

I'm first going to respond to this saying that they're 21 and 22, because that's actually a perfectly valid counter-argument. Please don't kick any puppies.

Also, they're actually playing much better than I think you realize. Monahan was coasting earlier in the year, but last night, he was creating plays, and generating offense. In January, it looked like the play was always dying on his stick. Now he's actually realizing his potential.

Dougie started off horribly, but he's quickly become one of the Flames' best defensemen. He hasn't stood out a ton, but that's a good thing for a defender. A couple of bad passes aside, he's looked great, skating well and scoring the odd goal - and his defense hasn't faltered.
