You're preaching to the choir on this one, I'm a huge fan of Sieloff, both the man and the player. After Ortio, he's my next pick.
Many on this board just have a thing for forwards. Though, after so many years of lackluster talent and goal scoring, I can understand why.

Or...
Maybe we think Granlund and Klimchuk are better prospects than Sieloff

Part of it is we have below average prospect depth on defence, probably bottom 5 in the league. Most teams have 2 or 3 dmen in their system better than Seiloff or Wotherspoon. Meanwhile we are bursting at the seams with forwards.

Max is a two way forward and is very good at it, whereas Granlund has way more offensive upside.

Not suggesting he is not a great prospect, but what exactly is fueling the optimism?

He's similar to Bo Horvat in that he does more than just score as he's a very well rounded player that competes hard and has leadership intangibles. I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a better pro than Horvat actually as I expect Horvat to be burdened by overly high expectations in Vancouver.

Gonna go with Wotherspoon again. Just a steady wall on the back end. Does everything good.

Nah it's got nothing to do with any love for forwards as personally I'm underwhelmed with the quality of defensive prospects compared to the forward position. The organization doesn't have a single defensive prospect that projects to be a top pairing defensemen and even top 4 may be generous for any of them.

Sure, coming out of training camp last year, he looked great, but you can't ignore what has happened to him since that time. He has played a grand total of 2 games since last training camp. He spent a significant chunk of time in the last year on heavy medication and unable to do any activity that would cause him to sweat.
There are significant question marks around his health right now and whether he'll ever be able to have a meaningful career.

Tyler Wotherspoon I think is the only one that qualifies as a #3/4 potential player. Sieloff is more of a bottom pairing guy. But yes, other than that, we have tons of forward potential over defense. Hopefully Treliving can fix that. Lots of quality defenseman to pick from next year in 2015.

i don't see any unjustified bias to any position. The flames have drafted a lot more high round forwards than they have defensemen. Goalies are just such an unknown almost regardless of their draft position and results in junior/minor leagues, i'm not ranking any goalie in my top 5, maybe not even top10 (not sure yet).

Sieloff shouldn't crack our top 10. From day one he topped out as a bottom pair Dman, and that was before missing a season with a life threatening injury. The kid is all heart but a guy like Kulak has more upside

Tops out as a bottom dman the same way Robyn Regehr topped out as a bottom pairing guy.
Offensive output has nothing to do with playing defense, and it's really been his only downside.

If you can name a top 4 Dman with worse point production than Sieloff then I am all ears. There simply aren't any. That combined with his health issues should drastically drop him in the ranks
And by the way, Regehr had more points as a 17 year old than Sieloff did the year AFTER he was drafted

My thoughts exactly.
Lots of talent left, but these two are at the top for me in building a team.
But if I am thinking out of my ass on this.... it explains a couple things....

Voting Wotherspoon here, but was a tough choice between him and Max power. Ended up picking Wotherspoon due to the composure he showed at the NHL level.

Max is very versatile and can play on any line in any situation. He can play an offensive or defensive and PK role. Granlund is a scoring forward. Max brings more of everything while Granlund has a higher straight up offensive ceiling, but hes not going to center a checking line.

Voted Jankowski.
I think he's going to have a break-out season with Providence this season.
He's such a big frame, and has great hands, good hockey sense, and is apparently developing a decent two-way game.
Could turn into something close to what Feaster/Weisbrod talked up to the fans.

A better comparison for Jankowski would be Joe Colborne. Colborne scored 41 points in his sophomore year and turned pro while Jankowski scored 25. Mark still has a fair upside but he needs to turn it up.
What I don't get is that Wotherspoon, Ortio, Granlund and Reinhart had great break out seasons for our top farm team and aren't getting rewarded ahead of a player who crapped the bed last year in Baertschi. Sure I like Poirier and Klimchuk too but they haven't proved much yet.
I'm starting to feel like I'm management in an arbitration case where I run down a player to get a cheaper contract when I actually like the player. It doesn't feel good.
