Kind of makes me not want him.
If he wanted to go elsewhere because the Hawks have a deep lineup and there might not be a lot of opportunity for him, I could understand it.
But being pissy over your brother being traded reeks of immaturity, IMO.
If that is in fact his reasoning, I would hope the Flames pass and let him enjoy Florida.

It is convenient that a big RW is just what the Flames need. Sign him if he wants to play here. Would it be worth having Hayes replace Jones and Jones be bought out?

The idea that the Flames should stay away because of the Schultziness of the situation is laughable. There are 28 other teams out there that will go after this kid if they feel he is a worthwhile prospect.
The Flames should absolutely be pursuing a trade for his rights if they like Hayes.

They might take a 3rd from a bad team... for instance our 2014 3rd instead of a 54th next year.
Getting a player in the system and learning Blackhawks hockey a year sooner might make 65th 2014 pick a preferable outcome to the 54th 2015 pick.

You have no idea what happened between his brother and the team...it could be immaturity or they could have really pissed the family off. If I felt some company screwed over my brother... I'd reconsider my relationship with them.

How can you possibly make that judgement? Maybe the Hawks weren't up front with his brother? Maybe he found out about the trade on the news? There are a thousand variables that you can't possibly know that would be legitimate reasons for being upset at an organization over the treatment of a family member.

That's why I said "kind of". If it was as simple as you trade my brother, I don't want to play for you, I'd pass on him. That's all I was inferring.
There's obviously many other factors that could be at play here, though. It's an interesting situation that I'm intrigued to watch play out.
Clearly I need to put more detail into my posts today, getting called out on everything I say this morning.

No jumping the gun at all. Jones is good for what? 32 games a season so far because of his shoulder? How can seeing what Hayes brings to the table for just as many games a season hurt?

I will admit, it was just one game and he's clearly better than that, but he left a pretty underwhelming first impression on me.

That was the worst game I saw Hayes play this year - don't judge him from that.
He is a 6'4" former first rounder. He is a good prospect with a legitimate chance of becoming an NHLer - probably at least as good, if not a little better than Arnold.
If the Flames can acquire him - go get it done.
And if you like him, find out f he is willing to sign and if so, make a trade for his rights.
I would think a 2nd plus Cundari or a 2nd + 3rd would be an attractive offer. It is probably a safe bet that Florida and/or other teams will be looking to acquire his rights as well, so just offering a 2nd isn't going to get it done.

The Flames shouldn't try to top the 2nd rounder. That price is too high for Hayes in my opinion. Wait until he's a UFA and try to sign him.

Let's put it this way: would you trade Cundari and a 2nd to get another 1st round pick?
And then if the Flames drafted a 6'4" RW, with that pick would you be happy?
I know I would be good with that scenario

He's not going to be a UFA. Someone is going to trade for him.

If he isn't worth a 2nd round pick, why would you want to sign him?

I just don't think i'd let Jones go (buyout) because of him. I'd wait for Jones to get injured before putting him in the lineup

That isn't true unless they recently changed it. You can trade players after the trade deadline but they are ruled ineligible for the playoffs. We once traded rocky Thompson for Filip Kuba after the trade deadline.

No point in any team trading for him unless you've got an agreement in principle with him and his agent. But if that's the case, why give up an asset at all? Handshake deal and he signs as a UFA in August?
