I get the flu shot every year since I started at my company and they offer it for free. It's been about 8 or 9 years that I've had it annually. Before then, I've never got it. With or without it, I don't think I've ever gotten the flu, so I have no idea if it's effective for me or not. But since there's no harm in getting it, might as well continue.

I got hit in 2009, worst 2 weeks of my life, easily lost 20-30 pounds. Have never experienced any flu like that, what a bad year to not take the flu shot.

Now I am confused, I thought H1N1 doesn't include vomiting/diahrea and was more of a respiratory thing?

Sometimes I think our civilization has jumped the shark when a product exists that will save your life, and people turn it down because "it has dead bugs in it" or "I don't know what is in it but my girlfriend Barbra has a cousin, who has a friend who says it has lots of poison in it"

It's like being in a lion's pit and someone handing you a knife, you turning around and saying "eww, the blade is dirty, and the handles is the colour blue, no thanks"

If it didn't impact innocent people, I would just say let nature take it's course and weed out these morons. However, I know their ignorance will affect not just them but my pregnant wife, and/or my sick brother. So ya, I totally get your frustration.

A lot of people now think the Flu is the "stomach flu" (which isn't an influenza at all). Flu is more of a respiratory thing (similar symptoms to a cold).

I didn't mean to sound snappy.

It could have been gastroenteritis, by the time they took my blood work it was almost 24 hours since I started feeling symptoms and they were subsiding.

I didn't go into all my symptoms here either. Just the stomach part. No one needs to read about the rest, haha.

Regardless,

My philosophy on the flu shot hasn't changed, even if it wasn't the flu. The underlying point was that if you deal directly with the public on an ongoing basis you should get the flu shot. If you don't, you never know when you will deal with large amounts of people over flu season, and thus you should get it as a precaution.

Edit: My philosophy hasn't changed since my last post, it has changed since last week.

Flu can include vomiting and diarrhea.

Quote:
Symptoms of H1N1 swine flu are like regular flu symptoms and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Many people with swine flu have had diarrhea and vomiting. But these symptoms can also be caused by many other conditions. That means that you and your doctor can't know, just based on your symptoms, if you've got swine flu.
Its very possible I could have had a bacterial infection, they put me on all kinds of drugs to be sure, there was a outbreak in Vancouver at the time of H1N1 so they were overloaded when I was there.

It's kind of funny, some people giving other people the gears for not getting a flu shot and Alberta will be out of the vaccine on Friday.

So give people a hard time because they run the risk of spreading the flu, yet we don't even have enough of the shots to give one to every person. Even if we made it mandatory to have a flu shot there would not be enough to cover everyone.

AHS kinda botched it this week though. Send out a highly panic inducing release when they did not have enough in their stores. They should have sent out this panic thing 3 months ago, but I guess that would have a bit of lying.

IIRC they are constantly making the vaccine and can ramp it up, just will take a few weeks to clear the backlog.
Basically AHS has handled this as poorly as they did the year of the original h1n1 outbreak. They learned nothing from that.

Just a quick note, but the shelf life of the vaccine is usually no more than a month. The Needless version can be longer though.
Unfortunately, the worldwide trend is similar in that people don't really start getting the vaccine until the flu season has already arrived.

You can always ask to lay down for your shot if you tend to pass out. I find it helps me a ton cause I hate needles as well.

DUDE, that's the kind of post you send in a PM!

I'm not concerned, I'm taking "blue the blanket" with me.

After work yesterday I popped by the flu clinic in sunpark. I got in line @ 6:05pm (they close @6:30) and was out of the door at 6:50 (that includes the 15min wait). Wasn't to bad at all. I heard someone mention that if you are lined up before they close then you won't get turned away.

You could ask for the nasal method. Thats what I got at South Calgary the other day (even though I'm not scared of needles).

That and many postpone getting it until they know that the vaccine they can get will protect them from the current strain of flu going around. Just because you have a flu shot doesn't mean it will be effective against the particular strain that year
